Default Power steering pump groaning.

Jumped in the car this morning, groaning noise coming under the bonnet, seems to be coming from the steering pump, changes in pitch when I turn the steering wheel and I can feel vibrations through the wheel. Reservoir still full.
Car running fine two days ago.

Will a seal kit fix this?

Your steering pump reservoir has a built in filter that over time can get clogged up. Sometimes the groan can be eliminated by just replacing the reservoir, which should be on your list of things to do anyway.

It worked for me in the Stepson.

Check that all your hoses involved are OK. ATF kills hoses, and when softened the suction line can collapse and cause noises, in my experience.

Also, the ps system requires DEXTRON III, or equivalent.
Same fluid for the A/T.
an incorrect substitution or additive may cause failure.

I struggled with this on the Murf car, it was cavitating fluid all the time (foamy fluid). Tried flushing and replacing the fluid and reservoir and bleeding multiple times. I ended up rebuilding the pump with the Rennbay kit while doing the timing belt, etc. but have not fired it since then. Also replaced the low pressure lines but I did not see a problem there. I hope it's fixed! I suppose it could be the pressure relief being stuck, that does not come apart during the rebuild and it is staked together good as one would imagine with 100-ish bar in play.

These pumps are pretty common but the nose cones and pressure settings differ. I believe the earlier 928 has a lower operating pressure that leads to the heavier, less boosted power steering feel some people laud or complain about.

Default Noise now gone.

Went to move the 928 today and expected the groaning but no, all quite? So went for a spirited drive, still nothing.

Anyone offer an explanation of what happened.

She's 27 years old, stuff happens. Probably a small clog somewhere that worked itself out after getting up to temp and steady pressure.

Bummer that nothing definitive occurred. That kinda stuff keeps me up at night.

If you are really getting a clogged PS filter I'd wonder where all the material is coming from, maybe torn boots or a missing balance tune is causing massive crud ingestion.
