Default Secondary Air Injection Pump Filter What is it?

Can i remove this filter since I am deleting cats and smog pump?

Do you guys removed the pump or just remove belt when you delete the smog pump?

If you aren't doing a timing belt, most will just remove the belt. This also makes it easy to revert back to stock should the car get sold on to a jurisdiction that requires it.

The filter housing is a great drink holder while working on the car, once the filter is removed.

In response to the "What is it" portion, sometimes the air pump dumps its flow into the intake, downstream of the airbox filter. So the little filter just makes sure that air is clean. No pump, no need for the filter. Just make sure you plug the hole in the airbox so you aren't drawing unfiltered air.

I remove everything and box it all up, plug all vacuum and Intake inputs.

Curious why you are going through the trouble of deleting the emissions stuff. Planning on not driving it and polluting? If so, just leave all that stuff there.

I'm hardly a rabid greenie, but I do like to inhale once in a while. At our last home, I could wake up to a spectacular view of the ocean from Orange County to Santa Monica Bay, with Catalina Island framing the view of downtown Los Angeles buildings and the Palos Verdes peninsula. On other days the air was so thick that visibility was less than a mile.

Do yourself and your neighbors a health favor -- Leave all those emission controls in place and working. Or stop inhaling.

My two sense.

The air pump setup is not a big deal on these cars. You either leave it in there or rip it out. The only benefit I have found to deletion is that it is easier to get the passenger valve cover out 5 minutes faster.

The air pump on the 928 injects fresh air into the exhaust before the catalytic converters. This air allows the catalytic converters to warm up quicker thus reducing emissions at start up.

After this the air bypassed and fed into the intake tubes before the filter.

The purpose of the air pump filter is to reduce the amount of foreign material going into the catalyst, for obvious reasons. More modern cars actually use air after the main air filter to get the same effect with less complexity.

The net environmental benefit of the air pump is questionable on the 928, unlike modern vehicles were the pump shuts off after the catalytic converter is warm the pump on the 928 continues to run and continues to be powered, is there a net benefit of cleaner air on start up vs more total burnt fuel at all times, I can't say.

The ideal environmental solution would be to uninstall the present air pump and install an electric on one on a timer.

I personally, don't see an issue with removing the pump, I do have more of a problem with removing the catalytic converters as they are a huge benefit to the environment.

The belt was cut off on mine when I bought it, and the cats had been deleted to make room for an x-pipe. Within a week, I cut the x-pipe to size and installed new cats. I left the pump alone.

Keep the cats. We have too many kids with asthma already.

My pump and everything that goes with it
are in my attic.
You can always reinstall it.
Clears up quite a bit of space in the
engine bay.

The air pump in diverter mode feeds upstream of the filter. The air pump filter is to protect the pump, diverter valve (& cats). At the port it's all unfiltered air, makes sense to plug the port to maintain 'cold' air - but not really a big deal.

You're absolutely right, as usual. For some reason always having to line up the tube with the port on the bottom of the airbox top tricked me into thinking that it was under the filter.

I gotta stay off Rennlist before my coffee kicks in.
