Why would it get a rebuilt title simply because it was stolen and recovered? That doesn't make sense to me.

Car was on ebay and Autocheck shows salvage due to theft.

car is near perfect condition. Interior is very clean. Paint is 9 out of 10. When i looked under it it looked very dry. It has both belly pans.
I did call NY DMV the car will need to go thru a state inspection at a DMV facility for a NY Title to be issued. Not sure how it works on other states
No service records.

I think it would get a salvage or recovered title if insurance company had to pay a theft claim on it. There is usually a grace period before they will pay out, but once it's paid out I think the title is marked. Not sure how other states work though.

This car is a tough one. Seems to be in nice condition last year 5 speed etc. But it's high mileage and salvage title make it low rung for future value. Personally I would take a low mileage clean title GT for same or less money and it would be a better investment in the long run. Another way to look at it is to buy it as a driver car, but again you can get a great driver grade GT or S4 for a fraction of the money. This would be a great car, for someone that has to have a GTS 5 speed on a budget and future value isn't a concern.

Um, okay. Good luck trying to find a 95 GTS 5 speed with lower miles and no title issue for anywhere near this money, much less a lower price

Interesting story, for sure.
Here's my 2c. In all my years, I have never been driving a car when someone came up and asked, "hey, nice car, is the title branded?"
So if the car was bought right, for the money, then perhaps it's a good deal to get into a GTS for cheap (relatively speaking).
Now, is it more difficult to insure? I honestly don't know how a branded title would affect the car. But if I did buy it, I'd enjoy it, and doesn't sound like the "story" caused any physical or mechanical damages.

IMO a salvage title kills the value only if the story behind it is hearsay. On the other hand, if the story behind the salvage title is 100% known then an informed decision can be made. Worst case, a very thorough PPI by someone that knows 928s inside and out can determine what's up or not.
For example: let's say there's a 5-speed GTS that was run without oil and totaled by the insurance company due to the cost of a new motor. But, Greg Brown rebuilt the motor using all new Porsche parts and his invoices come with the car. Is a salvage title a value killer?
