Lots of cars end up as almost-forgotten garage art (or worse) when some tiny problem stalls the major effort. Dust gathers, cooling systems corrode, and the good gas that was in the tank goes bad. Now instead of getting around to swapping in a new [pick something easy], you now have a pile of consequential issues to manage well beyond the [pick something easy] you intended.
Yes, Bob. This has pretty much been my additude all along...even with my black car. Never letting things get to far out of control and keeping it close to road worthiness. Plus, I like to leave them as close to possible road worthy...in case I should croak...or kill myself while the car is apart...and my wife has to sell them after I'm gone. Or option three...she kills me...once she finds out how much I've spent on these two beast...lol.

Thank you, for the imput...and reaffirming that I should work within boundaries.

Yes, William...I believe I'm leaning this direction.

Plus, I've got to keep it movable...since I plan on redoing my garage this summer and "they say" you should drive these early car on account of the fuel delivery system. So, I believe I'll do this...reassemble, replace fuel/vacuum lines and detail...and drive it once or twice. Granted, it will all be done in reverse to keep the mileage down.

Default After battling the flu and motivational issues...

I finally got the anti-freeze drained out completely. Putting the "new to me" phone dials on the other day was more than I could handle. So, yesterday...feeling about ninety percent, I went out and finished draining the anti-freeze and since William said I should drive it some this summer...l took off the rubber fuel lines along the passenger side inner fender.

I will say one thing...those fuel lines were never going to vibrate loose...lol.

They must have had an ape install them at the factory. Thought my 84's were on tight...but these made those seem like childs-play.

Since the door panels are still off...I removed the door locks and mechanisms for cleaning purposes.

Shouldn't be long before I hear from Rob Budd about the seats and door cards.

My fuel lines were a nightmare. Had to get under the car to access them as well.

Love the phone dials Brian, but I also love the Cup 1s - they are the nicest looking wheels IMHO.

Started old red for the first time in months Friday evening...and if you ever wondered what a half gallon of penetrating oil and different mixtures of lubes (used on the freak'n two rubber fuel lines) looks/smells like burning off a hot engine...well, it ain't pretty...even with both garage doors open and fans running...and the headache you will acquire the next day...wow.

Anyhow, she ran for about an hour while I filled the radiator. Good oil pressure and no leaks anywhere, fuel or anti-freeze wise. Only thing that was kind of weird...was on start up...she clattered pretty good for about a second and a half. Noticed it did this the last time it ran, but for only a half second or so. Not sure what type/weight oil is in her...so going to do an oil change and see if that helps.

Brain altering fumes aside...it was nice to hear her pushing fuel through the cylinders again.

Seats and door cards are done at Classic9leather, just have to pick them up sometime this week.

Yep, and for the most part...I don't believe the penetrating oil did much (besides the outstanding headache upon start up). Once they came a part, there wasn't a trace of oil down within the fittings. In comparison, the male ended fuel line comes a part rather easily...it's that female ended line that takes much more force and verbal abuse. The key was...tighting the fitting first...and using a set of line wrenches that go completely around the fittings.

It takes some doing, but once you remove the air pump tubing and valve assembly...you can get these wrenches in there around the fittings. But, even with these wrenches...the female ended line wouldn't twist a part...until I tried tightening them again. I'd tried tightening them with normal line wrenches, which flexed to much and the wrench jaws opened up ever-so-slightly under the pressure I was using. With the Xforce wrench and its super positive grip, I was able to feel movement while tightening the fitting...and once it tightened ever-so-slightly...it spun right off after loosening it...and I mean with my fingers.

I have taken to soaking the fittings daily or every other day with penetrant (I vary between croil, castle, and fluid film - Andrew taught me that one) - for about a MONTH before even attempting to get the lines loose. Very easy to bend the hard lines, and the ones under the car are NLA and the one across the engine is about $70. Every time I walk by the car I give them a "shot". If too badly rusted you are basically screwed and have to make the under car one and buy a new across motor one. Ask me how I know.

Went down to Classic9leather and picked up the seats/door cards for old red Friday. Two thumbs up on the excellent work! Thank you, Rob and associates.

Installed everything this morning, besides the drivers door card...since the door panel is still getting glued up.

Snapped a couple pictures of her new goods.

Loving the new phone-dail rims. Tires have cracks you could fit a quarters edge in, so shake-down suspension speeds were well under wide-open-throttle conditions. Plus, she doesn't have plates or insurance.

She stopped, coming in the drive and wondered why old blacky was sporting her old Cup 1 wheels.

Ended up putting her inner fender wheel covers, belly pan, fan shroud and other bits back on...since she was getting a little "to" disassembled for my likings...and she is "suppose to be" my retirement project. Changed the oil and she didn't seem so clattery on start up the last couple times. But, tomorrow morning will be the true test.

Now, the rest of the story...(for anyone who is still following along...lol)

Pulled the zip-lock bag out of the hatch that contianed the fasteners for the seats and counted eveything out, eight seat frame bolts and threaded bottom washers, four allen-headed bolts for the rear seats and four black screws for attaching carpet...good to go. Start with the rear seats and they are done within minutes. Bolt in passenger seat, no problems...go to start the drivers seat...and I only have three seat frame bolts and bottom threaded washers. Searched the entire car, garage, tool box, eveywhere... approximately ten times...and couldn't find the fourth one anywhere. It's like it just disappeared into thin air. Luckily, I had one from #613 and finished up. Never encountered anything like this in my life, usually, a few backtracking trips and the items is found.

Anyhow, all's well that ends well.

Now, old red is moveable...so I can get started on the garage improvements. Paint, lighting changes, cabinet...and maybe an additions (work shop).

Beautiful job on the seats!

Question- to the immediate right of the narrow shift boot, what goes on the 'floor' of the shifter cutout area? Is there a piece of vinyl or something covering the inner rubber boot, or ?

That area is a black box on Minerva, need to figure out what to do there soon.

Rob,

It appears to be completely made of vinyl, it is all one piece, from base to midway up the shifter.

EDIT: MAY HAVE MIS-SPOKEN...NOT REALLY SURE IF THE ENTIRE BOOT AREA IS MADE FROM ONE PIECE OF VINYL...MAY BE MADE OF SEVERAL PIECES SEWN TOGETHER.

Can only imagine that there was a certain amount of leeway, while doing some of these early car. Maybe there was some artistic gray-area as to what the interior person could do and not do? Maybe, there is no right or wrong...in the beginning.

Hope you and William are getting along well with #107.

Brian.

The piece on the console is leather and a single piece. The shift boot is leather and made from 4 pieces.
I used to offer the shift boot and console piece (trimmed).

In an early 'vinyl' 928, there are 3 leather objects... The a.m. pieces and steering wheel.

Brian, the seats look great! I have the same setup coming back from Bob's for #241.

Hello, Jim.

Funny you should bring this up...since, it was "kind of" going to be a surprise and all.

But, Rob and I were admiring your seats while I was there Friday and Rob mentioning how this new material should last much longer than the original stuff. So, we got to thinking that maybe we should do a test...I'd put your interior in my car, park it out in a field for thirty years...and see what they look like afterwards.

Naturally, my seats will be stored in Rob's temperture control shop the entire time...so they will be nice and soft and stuff for me when needed.

Here's old red and your seats...

Granted, it's only been a day and a half...but they are holding up nicely!

We'll talk in a few years, 30, and hopefully this trend continues.

Brian.
