(1983 S) As you all know, the warning lights scattered across our gauges are completely invisible when not in use. I only recently relised they were even there and clearly not working. A 928 expert at the Sharktober fest suggested I look behind the dead pedal. Low and behold:
So I plugged it in and my cluster lit up like a Christmas tree. The only warning light that stays illuminated is the brake pad warning. I recently changed the pads and a quick search reveals that its warning light is problematic. Fine, I’ll attempt to fix that at some point.
The question I have is why was this unplugged? Surely a constantly illuminated brake pad warning light isn’t so annoying that one would sacrifice all of the other warning lights.
Is there likely a deeper problem here that would require someone to do this?

Answering this is a shot in the dark.
Good news is you plugged back in and only brake pad warning on. Sounds like you've been driving and car running OK.

Thanks for your reply. Yep, it's been fine all day and it's nice to finally have a low fuel light and and handbrake light (amongst others). I reckon someone unplugged the brain when they were trying to sell the car. Not being an experienced 928er when I bought it (even less so than I am now), I didn't notice that they weren't there.

Well I guess you can take heart that this speaks to your car being in good condition and not faltering without warning you. When you plugged the central nervous back in it didn't tell you anything bad.

Told me that I was low on window washer fluid. That was an easy fix. The brake pad warning light doesn't go out. I did inspect the sensors when I changed the pads recently. They looked good and didn't appear to damaged. (I did wonder how the car would communicate to me that the pads were thin)

Yes, that is true. Still odd that someone would unplug that box. Perhaps the cables worked themselves loose.
Perhaps an inept mechanic somewhere in its history.
Could be. Reinstalling the dead pedal isn't entirely trivial. I'm sure many people don't know that there is rather surprising level of adjustment down there: three 'settings' are available for drivers with either too short or too long a left leg.

Yes, but nonetheless should have been done.
The 928 is renowned for its sensing and warning systems. Can you imagine not know your timing belt is lose until you hear the clickity clack sounds. Even if troublesome, someone should've had it operational.
Well, as is well and in good hands now.
