Default 928 story On Yahoo.com today - one of the most important porsches ever built

Porsche 928 article

So to settle the argument: The 928 isn’t just a real Porsche, it’s one of the most important Porsches ever built.

Great article. It won't be long for the greater car enthusiast world to recognize what we all already know.

That article is just a cut and paste of posts from this forum for years, not that it is any less true.

My avowed 911 enthusiast buddy was over at Rob's yesterday looking over the partially dismantled '78 Minerva. He marveled at the exposed components and construction. Called the 911 suspension of his '86 Carrera "archaic" compared to the '78 928's modern components.

I have always believed that it was a matter of time when 928 get its proper appreciation. It is just taking longer than I ever expected.

Many people talk about the "recognitions the 928 deserves finally" and I am not sure if there is such a thing. For me, the 928 had been my dream car since being a teenager and I am sure many current owners share the same sentiment. However, I doubt the small rise of interest lately is driven by more actual enthusiasts but by a greedy group of used car salesmans riding the surfs of classic car frenzies.

Thanks for posting that.
Most complimentary for a car that has gone under the radar for what it really is in part due to being considered a challenge to the old staple of a fine German sports coupe. I think it was never a challenge to the rear engine coupe, but was the development of a highly performing GT car.

Recently, there are many articles writing about 928. Here is another one.

Kevin's thread was merged into this thread so he had no knowledge of the link posted.

Writers can write what they want. "Real" Porsche guys look down on us.

It's not much of a problem anymore, really, as they're shamed that Porsche mostly is making SUVs for suburban moms. In contrast, 928 enthusiasts are almost welcome cause at least it's sort of a sports car, to them. We've become like shirt-tail cousins who are tolerated if we don't talk too much.

I don't hang out with a lot of "traditional Porsche guys," but I do interact with a fair number semi-regularly at PCA breakfasts (what can I say, I like pancakes) and other than some good-natured ribbing that goes both ways, I haven't seen any actual disrespect. In fact, my car (and one other that shows up) gets a fair bit of attention. Maybe this is changing, or maybe the group here is just more accepting than others, I don't know.

What is a "real" Porsche guy? I've been in PCA since about 1991 (with a 928) and disdain towards the 928 has been minimal to zero outside of general ribbing at the bar like car guys do.

Some of my oldest friends are long time air cooled *** dragging lovers, and they've never looked down on the 928. It's just not their "thing" any more than I don't feel the need to own a 911.

Frankly I think it's a horrible article.

For starters, anyone who knows nothing about the 928 will take away from that article the 928 was only conceived once the 914 and 924 failed. In reality those two cars had absolutely nothing to do with the decision to produce the 928.

I think the author is about as clueless as that previous editor who claimed all 928's have cracked blocks from years passed.

I cannot begin to count how many ways this line if a total fail: "it became clear pretty quick that the 924 wasn’t going to be the silver bullet Porsche had hoped it would be. But for its next attempt at a front-engined car, Porsche got it right."

WHAT???

I disagree. The 928 was on my list of dream cars growing up, as well as my brother's. People like you, my brother and me longed for the car until we grew up and could actually afford one and I think that this is what is driving the rise in interest, we can afford them now. The greedy salesmen still have to follow the rules of supply and demand, they can't get the price if nobody is willing to pay it.

Others on my list of dream cars:
Porsche 911 - owned one, liked it, but when one had to go, it was the 911
Pantera - I grew up and can't fit
C3 Vette - own one, it is cool, but has not lived up to a kid's dream
Shelby Cobra - (replica) have one, but I never get it out, it's a garage decoration

The 928 is the only dream car that has lived up to expectations and as we continue to drive them, show them, and explain them to others, I believe that the popularity will continue to rise.
