Default front suspension/steering

I have an '87 928s4 with app 245K miles & the steering has a bit of play in it...what should I look for as to tightening it up??? tie rod ends/steering rack???

usually, its the steering rack .

Look at the rubber coupler half-way down the shaft that connects to the input of the rack.

Tie rod ends are vulnerable, especially if the boots have gone as they invariably seem to and at that mileage [as Mark says] if that is an original rack then it is probably well past its best.

Other things could be starting to wobble- wheel bearings, steering rack rubber mounts generally go "mushy" and a custom mod is to fit Delrin bushes instead as a repair/upgrade.

You need to isolate the source of your problem be it individual elements or a summation of contributing elements- that you go for broke and just hit everything [not always a bad idea on these cars].

245k miles is a significant amount of use and as such in terms of wear items the car owes you nothing unless of course such items have been replaced previously so the history is useful in that regard.
