Default HOW TO mount S4 spoiler on early model hatch??

Guys,

I'm planning on mounting an S4 spoiler/wing on an 84 Euro hatch. The S4 hatch has two (L & R) recessed areas for the spoiler / wing fasteners & backing plate. The 86 or earlier MY hatch does not have the recess area.

The $64K question: How do you modify the 84's hatch in order to mount an S4 spoiler?

Is there a link, thread, pictorial, etc, detailing the process? I've done my due diligence via thread / post searches and I've got squat...

Thanks, Joel

Sorry, can't help you on this but by the way I wouldn't put a S4 spoiler on an '84.

Keep the original one. Designed and beautiful that way.

But that's me!

The GOOD news is that he didn't ask for opinions.

If you absolutely have to do it just mount an S4 hatch on the early car... yes you can drill the holes but the indents for the fasteners will take a lot of work.. easier to get an S4 hatch and repaint.... but my stance is whack that wing... looks better without it on any model.

Hatches are plentiful and last time I checked relatively inexpensive.

I might put an S4 spoiler on my 79 track car the only way I'll do this is using an S4+ hatch.

That was my thinking too, pretty sure he'll have to drill and mount it..just get the whole hatch.

Assuming that you have the S spoiler on the 84.?.?.?
If so you are dealing with more than just drilling holes. The qtr window wings and the underlying rubber gasket and the two trim pcs per side. Then you have the missing trim that belongs where the uppermost portion of the S spoiler rests and the trim clips that replace the wedges used to hold the S spoiler in place. It can be done but would be more cost effective and easier to buy a S4 hatch. Even then you have the rear quarter windows to consider.

Here is an interesting read:

The 86.5s had the indent in the hatch and has a old spoiler on them. Get a hatch like this and you can keep both spoilers AND mounting bolt spots won't look like a hackjob.

I'm not sure I'd even start the project if I were you. i don't think anyone should put a big wing on a car as sleek as the early 928. just looks gaudy.

Agreed. clutter never makes a car look better. think cruiser skirts, mudflaps, spinners, bug deflectors, spotlights, extra "running lights"..... heh heh
-'79 5 sp, nice and clean.

Thanks for the advice... Here's some background. The car WAS an 84 "S" Euro with the rear spoiler. The previous owner had that removed along with the side moldings, side markers, antennae, rear hatch wiper, headlight washers, etc. They had it all, including the "S" spoiler mounting holes, filled in and smoothed over and installed OB style rear quarter windows & trim with the intent of adding a wing style spoiler. The old "S" style spoiler, windows and trim no longer fit... that's a done deal. They were shooting for a retro-mod styled car... I have a wonderful STOCK 86.5 so something a bit different appeals to me and personally, I like the spoilers.

When I purchased the car (it's a project and a half) it came disassembled (in a 1000 pieces) including a fresh custom paint job (windows, trim & interior out) - very nice. I have two wings - an S4 or a fiberglass custom made wing. Both will fit on the hatch and I plan on using one of them. The issue, metallic paint is a bear to match up and getting an S4 hatch & painting it a custom platinum / gold metal flake with red pearl will be difficult (at best) to match if not damn near impossible. Besides, we have some leftover paint, but not THAT much... Although, we do have enough paint to touch up the underside of the hatch after the mod, just not enough to paint an entire hatch. That's the rub...

I know mounting the wing is going to be difficult, that much is a given, which is why I'm on here looking for assistance from someone who's already been down this road. This can't be the first and I'm bound and determined to finish this project with the original idea of a retro-mod styled 928. I think it will look awesome... completely different... and yes, the purists will hate it... again, that much is a given... but it doesn't concern me... I wish the car would've had an S4 hatch added prior to the paint job, but that ship has sailed.

Sooooo... is there a thread or post or procedure where someone has done this mod? Any insight, advice, assistance or directions would be greatly appreciated Thanks again!

Would you take pics of the underside of the hatch where the S4 wing mounting bolts come through so I can get an idea what they've done? That would be a lot of help...

Thanks in advance!!
