Yes, that is quite possible.

No button on the side of my key (car is 1983).
No graphic on the appropriate center console button.
All interior buttons accounted-for (though some might still be invisible).
Button on carpet on L side of driver seat is marked as a SPEAKER control; pulling just removes it.
But there's a lot of complexity back there, so I wonder...

On drivers AND passenger sides there should be identical 'buttons' just to the side of the seats. They should have an icon on it for hatch opening. If functioning, by pulling up should activate hatch release.

There is no button next to the passenger side seat.
The button on the driver side is printed with a speaker icon. Pulling removes the button from the shaft, which is clearly that of a potentiometer. By feel, the pot is wire-wound, which suggests that it is intended to control the rear speakers.

Hmmm...
This is almost as important as my cupholder mod! It's one of the convenience items that should be addressed to optimize my Daily Driver 928*. Perhaps someone has solved this by adding a cable or solenoid to the existing mechanism. If there are no footprints to follow, I'll pull it all apart and figure it out.

Yeah, I guess 83 didn't always have a remote release. The factory release is pretty complicated for what it does. It won't be easy to add a solenoid or cable. I wish you the best of luck on it though. I just finished adding a VW actuator to replace my old release motor. you may be able to source a used one that you can adapt to your car.
