Separating seat cushion from rails/mechanical system
Is it possible to disconnect and remove all the seat mechanical stuff from the underside of the cushion? I'm getting ready to send my seats to Rob Budd and if it's not too hard to do it seems like it would eliminate of a lot of weight in the package.
Looking at the mechanism, it appears there are four vertical lifting points, one at each corner of the cushion. Each one has an unthreaded steel rod going up into a metal plate just under the foam cushion. It appears that if one could separate at these four points the entire system of motors, cables and rails would just drop off the underside (less the wiring of course, which would have to be released from various attachment points).

Yes. At least on my 84, the seat bottom rests on a pedestal that contains the motors, etc. Those two sections must be separated to reupholster anyway. You could probably save 25% of the weight of each seat.
Good luck,

I don't know who you are planning to ship with but bear in mind that with UPS Ground, once the size of the box starts exceeding a maximum set of dimensions, they charge you for a fairly heavy weight no matter what the actual weight is. This is how they compensate themselves for handling your large box. But I agree based on my recent foray into seats that some of the motor drives can be removed. If I recall, the entire seat weighs about 55 pounds. That's for a 1986 model Recaro.

I just sent two seats and some other stuff in 3 boxes with a total weight of 130lbs to from MI to CA for $155.
