It's just semantics.

"Worth" is subjective. If someone buys it for $60K, then it it "worth" the price. It may not be worth it to you, but the car's worth will be determined by what it sells for.

Hi Mike,

Your assumption is pretty accurate. I probably would not have bought my car if it were offered at $60k, it would have to look like it does now as opposed to what it looked like when I bought it. But if you're looking for one, you either pay this kind of money or buy one with a bunch more miles or, you get lucky like I did and find one from the original owner who didn't really know what they had.

You are right on about low mileage not necessarily putting the car into this price range. I too have seen really low mileage cars that were basket cases. Mine was close to that point when I bought it. If the car would have had 28,000 miles instead of 8,000 I would have passed. I spent over $500 at the Dent Wizard, hours on top of hours cleaning the engine compartment and interior and had to have the wheels refinished because they had been used as curb feelers. There were french fries and parking stubs from Disney World under the seats. My car was truly a rescue. Then again, most people are not as picky as me when it comes to clean and might have veiwed the car differently then me.

I'm certainly not in the league of some of the people paying this kind of money for these cars but there seems to be plenty of them willing to pay the money for them whatever their motivation. The guy that bought the other 8k mile GTS plans to drive it and will surely rack up the miles and doesn't really care about the depreciation doing so will bring. He loves the 928 and has the means to do as he pleases.

I haven't seen any pictures of the car in question that make me think its not a great car. I did speak to a guy who was trying to buy it and when the seller wouldn't budge on the difference between what this buyer was willing to pay, the guy went and bought a new 996 turbo. The fact that these cars are selling for this kind of money makes them worth it.

Hey Chuck -

Good comments. I guess the biggest question I have is the "motivation" of some buyers........specifically the last one you mentioned. I mean, your ready to spend a good chunk of change on a car and apparently you like the 928 GTS......so you find a nice low mileage example but can't come to terms with the seller......so you go buy a new 996 turbo???? Let's face it, the GTS is a fantastic car......but not in the same league as a new
996TT all the way around except for maybe looks. If I could drop $110K on a car......I would not even look at a GTS......even if it had 10 miles on it. I'd be all over the 996, (insert several others here also). Truly a weird buyer in my book.....but there are some out there......

BTW.......my GT also came with french fries and one melted Milk Dud under the drivers seat. I almost think that fries deserve their own option code as I have found them in all my past 928s......the Milk Dud I think was an
"exclusive option"........

Hi Chuck,

If you don't mind, can you tell me/us how you found your car ?
Sounds like you did not go through ebay, autotraders, cars.com etc etc ...
Any secrets ???

Thank you

Hi Mike,

The guy who bought the 996 TT really wanted a GTS 5-speed because he had two GTSs before but couldn't find one. Not sure how long he looked but the first time I talked to this guy he was selling his low mileage 1994 GTS 5-speed to raise cash for a business venture and when I spoke to him next, his business had taken off and he wanted another.

I'm not sure if I would jump at a 996 TT if I had the means to do so. I say that only because loosing $40-50k on a car that I use for pleasure doesn't compute in my brain given my real life situation. Who knows, if $40-50k was no big deal to me I might have done the same thing.

Hi Jinn,

I found my car in an ad on cars.com. I was on the net one day and as most of us do, I was cruising the for sale ads. I went on cars.com, sorted them by year and read the ad for a 1995 928 GTS, blue/gray, 5-speed and 8k miles! When I read the price, I thought it was either a misprint or they seriously didn't know what they had or there was something more serious wrong with the car. I called my SO at work and told her we had to buy this car if it was for real. She agreed but said I would have to sell my MINT condition 1989 928 GT.

I called the number in the ad and was the very first caller on the first day the ad ran. They only put it in the Orlando paper so it was only listed on cars.com. Turns out the owner was a very weathly Brazilian who had a bunch of high end sports cars that he was selling in order to spend more time with his grandchildren.

He had his business associates take the car to Porsche of North Orlando for them to appraise. They shot him a really low number I guessing because they thought they were going to get the opportunity to buy the car. The sellers then placed the ad just north of what the dealer quoted. Thanks to Rennlisters Dave Schaffer and Larry Ware who acted as my eyes when I had the PPI done and told me the cars was solid. Within one week of reading the ad, we rented a Ford Excursion and a U-haul trailer and were in Orlando getting ready to haul the car home. I never met the owner and dealt only with his associates. I did trade a couple faxes with him while he was at one of his other his other homes in Rio.

There was a small language barrier between me and the associates of the seller that had me worried for a while thinking they were going to sell the car out from under me. They were skeptical of me and I of them. They kept telling me, "we are getting lots of phone calls, you need to come and get the car or we're going to sell it to someone else." This was like the same day I agreed to buy the car. I reassured them that I was going to follow through and that we would be down to pick the car up by the end of the following week. I read the ad on a Thursday and by the following Thursday, we were in Orlando putting it on a trailer. After numerous phone calls to raise their comfort level with me, they finally were convinced of my intentions and things went very smooth. Right place, right time.

Hi Lagavulin,

I agree, its always cool to see others perspectives about the subject. BTW, have you registered your car in the 928 Registry? If not, you can do it here:

928 Registry

Jinn,

Thanks. Ibis published my pics b/f I had my site. Here are a couple before and after of my engine. It was REALLY dirty and a detail shop had sprayed something on the engine that was almost impossible to get off. It was sticky and all the Florida sand stuck to it. What a mess!

more engine pics - before and after
