Exhaust question
Hi there new member to the forum. I have owned 911's got the past 25 years and currently have a 86 carerra 3.2 that I have owned for 18 years. I have recently purchased a 84 928s2 to use as my daily drive.
It is a euro car with the 310hp engine. The car is in pretty good condition with a few electrical issues to sort out as well as a embarrassing rattle that I'm pretty sure is coming from the muffler that is under the front seats, I think the inside of the muffler has come loose. I am thinking of just deleting this muffler all together but not sure what affect it will have, now much noisier and does it affect the engine in any way. I would welcome any opinions and I'm sure I will have many other questions as I start going thru the car

Hi Paul. Nice looking car - is it the one that was for sale in Cooroy?
I had a similar rattle in my 87. It was the small box about under the front seats. The guys at Nambour Xhaust services made me a nice bypass while I went and had a good breakfast around the corner.
There is basically no change in the sound of the car.

Welcome to The Tank - nice looking OB.
I may be wrong about this, but the tread pattern on your tires leads me to believe they're directional, and I think the left rear is mounted incorrectly. Look at the outside sidewall of the tore and see if there is the word "inside" or an arrow that indicates the proper direction of rotation. Someone may have swapped the rears trying to even out the tread wear, and didn't realize they were directional. The only way to rotate directional tires is to unmount and remount.
...or it may just be an odd tread pattern and you're good to go, but check it out.

Welcome Paul Great to see another Aussie posting. Nice looking car!
Deleting that muffler makes little difference to the sound, and as Jim noted is more to help with resonance. I suspect that it may also act as a crossover 'H', as its a twin pipe muffler, but haven't pulled one apart to see.

Thanks for the replies and I have removed the muffler and the rattle has gone so a good result with no noticeable affect on the car
Thanks Dave technically a kiwi in oz but close enough and Peter you are correct and well spotted, the rears have been mixed up by the PO but all sorted now.
I have just bought some 17" Boxster wheels so will get them on soon anyway, just not sure if I like the originals or not

Welcome to the 928 masochist - er, owner - club!
Further to Pete's post about the tires, those look like Yokohama AVS Sports, and yes, the rears are improperly mounted (I had several sets on my GT in the past). Glad you were able to sort it out - and keep in mind that you're likely driving on VERY OLD rubber so you might want to examine them for cracks first.
Enjoy the car!
