Like everything that ever comes loose on a 928, the cause is always the same....improper torque when worked on.

I recently had a car in for repair that had motor mounts replaced by a very highly respected "928 shop". Every piece of hardware was right around the same tightness....38-40 foot lbs. 8mm, 10mm, 12mm....didn't matter....all the same. I threw away all the 8mm hardware, checked the 10mm hardware by loosening and torquing, and simply torqued the 12mm stuff.

I can tell you what electric impact was used...without ever seeing the shop....

Remember, NOTHING ever will come loose on a "virgin" 928!

Porsche torqued everything!

My first thought was a cracked front sway bar mounting point.

Mine broke from the PO's installation of a Devek sway bar. Made a scary noise until Doc Brown discovered and repaired it - and replaced that Devek crap with an OEM sway bar.

You forgot the case where random fasteners left-over from the last car in the shop were 'made to work.'

Undertrays come to mind for that ... what's left of'em.

Yeah. But, the conical lock nut thing...

You've got me curious. Next time I take one of those off, I'm going to check the torque it takes to move them. I think it's on the order of 40 ft-lbs.

I could see them working completely off if not torqued-to-spec... after 25k-miles.

Sway bar falling off. Damn.

I can't tell if that's a lock nut. But, if it just spins on all the way with fingers it ain't a lock nut...

Actually, there are (at least) two kinds of lock nuts: conical lock nuts and distorted thread lock nuts. I'm pretty sure the OE nuts were the former. But, I wouldn't bet a nut (locking or otherwise) on that without more research.

Jeez this Gregg guy is impressive!

No offense Dave, Stan!

Just alluding to the outstanding remote tech-snipe there.

Glad he keep chiming in to R/L, Thanks Gregg (et al)!

My car did that noise when the bolts were not tightened enough after a front end alignment. The camber/caster adjustment bolts need to be really tightened down

Rob, if you're missing your left foot, I think I've located it.

Over the last few days, I was noticing some clunking coming from the left front suspension. It got really bad today, so after I got home, I pulled the left front wheel and inspected all the points I thought might be loose. I actually expected to see the sway bar link half off or something. Didn't see anything amiss and was a bit discouraged.

Then I decided to put a wrench on everything... and sure enough, found the front nut on the Ott sway bar link adapter nice and loose. Didn't look it. But it was.

Crappy cell phone picture of the bolt/nut in question:

Moral of the story: put a wrench on everything. Visual inspection doesn't cut it.

Next time I'm in there, I'll see if I can get some improved hardware less prone to loosening.

Was the fastening hardware the OE stuff or something else? (As in, I'm curious to know if it was a locking nut or not?)

It's whatever came with the link adapter, I think. Doesn't seem to be a lock nut, but as you can see from the photo, it's got a split-type lock washer under it, which evidently isn't sufficient. I'm about 99% sure I didn't go out and acquire my own hardware when I installed these many, many years ago.

Any reason not to just back up that nut with a jam nut?

I drove Kevin's car at Shartoberfest....the clunk was/is the counterweight in the torque tube sliding back and forth.

There's no mistaking that noise, after you've heard it once and figured out where it is coming from. Sounds like there is a bowling ball loose in the battery box, sans battery.
