Default Reasons why killing the 928 series was a good thing..

So as I sit here and patiently wait for parts to come back from the machine shop, etc.. I am thinking about the positive aspects of the 928 being a discontinued model...

One thing that is kinda cool is that, in many ways, it has a "completeness" aspect. The 911 series lacks that. What I mean, is that the 928 was conceived and designed as a new design, executed to high state-of-the-art standards for design and production, it was allowed to develop and improved over several model years, and then concluded. The 928 sort of stands as a completed automotive project.

Anyway, what do I know? !!

Many of the 911 crowd will say that also happened with the 993.

Hmm...very good point...
At least the 928 didn't live to see an "e-hybrid" version, etc, etc.....
lol

That would indeed be wild to think of what the 928 would look like now, if the production run had just continued...

Hmmm...Bet we would all have cup holders.

It would probably have prevented the birth of the AMG GT.

And, it didn't live to see its glorious NA V8 downsized to a turbocharged V6, of all things.

I wouldn't mind a 928 with a PDK though. Anyone done that yet?

Killing the 928 and 968, and introducing the boxster and cost reduced 911 with shared boxster parts saved porsche.

Carl (FLYVMO) is doing a fine job of modernizing his 928 here: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ished-car.html T

Yeah Porsche was not the only automaker who had to make changes when 2+2 seat GT cars became public enemy #1. Toyota Supra - bye. Nissan 300ZX - sayonara. Mazda RX-7 - 'nuff said. Even cheap imitations like the Eagle Talon went south and never came back. The Miata ushered in a roadster craze that was just unstoppable. Enter Boxster, which Porsche developed so quickly the first run of engines had a 50/50 chance of blowing up.

No cost sharing and no one buying the 928 at $100K. I suspect the OP knows why it was killed. He's just trying to see the silver lining. If we wanted to pick nits with the OP's characterization, I suspect any business would take an "incomplete" project like the 911 over a "complete" (i.e., discontinued) project like the 928. The 928 sits in the annals of automobile history as a "complete" project because it wasn't profitable, not because it had somehow arrived at some kind of finish line of car perfection. It's just more fun sometimes to think of it that way. The Yugo is also a complete car. The whole Yugoslavia project is complete for that matter.

Now, if we want to talk about a car that arrived at a pinnacle, then we can talk about my 997.1 Turbo. Everything since has gone the wrong direction.

Some will tell you it's 100% chance--if you wait long enough. That engine got shared with the 996 too.

Jimmie Johnson can tell you about how important bearing seals can be, even if they aren't expensive. Sorry, that's a reference to recent, good ol' moonshine runnin' American racin' for all of you scratching your heads.
