Prior to installing the alternator, thread the pivot bolt into the alternator from the front until there is ~1/8 to maybe 1/4" gap between the head of the bolt and the front alternator arm. Then gently tap the front end of the bolt to push the sliding piece back. This opens the 'clamp' so the alternator can be wiggled some as you insert the bolt.
Good ideas like this seem obvious after reading them. Why didn't I think of that?
Without Scott asking the initial question, I would have struggled on for who knows how long without finding out about this simple easy way to make the re-installation just that much easier.

Cheers,
Gary.

No I don't think it matters, but the diff is in the back, behind the gearbox. it doesn't have one of those long pivoty bolt thingies.

Insert the bolt head side into the fan, between two fan blades. Then line the bolt up with the bracket hole. Once the bolt is in a bit, move and pivot the alternator while further inserting the bolt. You will need to 'feel' if the holes are lined up. Sometimes a jack under the alternator helps.

It takes some persuading and a bit of force and is best done from below.

It looked like the flexible hose was leaking near the banjo bolt. I followed Dwayne's direction to rebuild my return line, but I have a solid line at the rack (https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/406615-ps-reservoir-hose-r-and-r-with-pics.html). Can this flexible line be replaced with the same procedure?

ahh, thats right.. i forgot that the GT alternator is not the same as the stock alternator. maybe this is the difference i had to fix with the nut.

None the less, getting that bolt in the hole is tough with the radiator hose in the way, you need to do some pressing and pulling and shoving to get it through.

The leaking hose is the return line from the reservoir to the PS cooling line. Line attaches to the cooler line with a clamp.
Hose 928 347 449 07
Clamp 999 512 554 00
Crush washers x 2 900 123 042 20
