Hey Sterling I think the best thing for your mental health is to sell your car cut your losses and move on. This isn't the first time you have come on the forum in this state of mind looking for direction. I know you have spent a ton of money on your car, and to be honest I have always admired your innovations. But I don't think you can move forward until you put it all behind you. You despise the sight of the car and have had absolutely no drive to work on it for quite some time, do you see this changing in the future? If the answer is no, chock the whole 928 thing up as a life experience and move on. You will be much happier.

I can totally relate to you on this one. If you overdo something for too long, you run the risk of burning out. And yes, being older and wiser changes some things. However, there are many old and wise people here who still love their 928s, just not as obsessive as you once did.

I remember riding in your car during the ICOC in Dallas. What a thrill - the sheer power in any situation. Thanks for the opportunity to experience the only quad cam 928 I've ever known of!

If I were you, I would think twice about any knee-jerk reactions. Is "killing" it really the answer? Or is the answer to walk back a bit, put a regular motor in, put it back together as simple as possible, and then enjoy it?

I'm sure there is a reasonable middle ground to get the famous 928SG back on the road where it belongs.

If it makes you feel better, I'm under 1k miles/year these days. But I admit that it still makes me smile whenever I see it in the garage. There are so many great memories connected to it, and I don't think about the few bad ones very often.

Think about it this way: you could have bought a run-off-the-mill Ferrari and spent just as much.

 

I viewed it your way for a while, similar situation.
Decided my life was ticking and the noise was getting louder.
Collected it all up and put the stuff in the hands of friends who appreciated the work I'd done, imperfect as it was.
The burden is gone. There are so many other things to get involved with.
The money and time are gone, it hurt at first but the overall dollar figure / value are ultimately immaterial. Celebrate what you did accomplish, feel happy if parts you sell for pennies on the dollar make an impact on somebody elses project and move on.
That's what I did.
And I'm real careful not to go so deep again on replacement interests.
Truly and sincerely, that 150 is peanuts. Enjoy the 15 or 20 you get for the junk and get your freaking life back in a positive way.
The destructo thing wont give you the separation you need.
Its common with car projects, far more common than you think, similar money in many cases.
Its simple. Call it.

Don't burn it, drive into the 5th Ward in Houston about 10 pm.

Leave it running outside a convenience store in the worst possible neighborhood you can find and leave a $100 bill and 5 gallon can of gas on the passenger seat.

The rest will take care of itself...

I've driven mine 3 times in the last 2 years. Then it caught fire. I probably won't get to drive it this year at all.

Self maintained supercar/sportscar/oldcar ownership is a manic depressive thing. High highs and LOW lows.

 

I've got no problems with cars, but I am having frequent similar experiences with our house and all the crazy projects that my wife starts here long before the earlier ones have been finished. And I have to live here, nobody's forcing you to sleep in your car.

 

Sterling, I've been exactly where you are now. Spent a ton of money on mods and seemed like I was spending all my free time working on the damn thing. Then I bent the valves on the return trip from my divorce hearing. I was ready to burn it to the ground right then and there. Instead I turned the car over to Sean to do the valves and get it running then sold it on consignment (at a great loss of $$$).

Meantime I went out and bought a new 911. For me it was the right decision, got rid of my maintenance headache and moved to modern technology while staying in the Porsche family. Oh, and there will be NO mods to the 911!!! The really great thing about this community is "It's not the cars, but the people."

My recommendation to you would be to forget the ITB's, go back to the stock intake and just get it running! Then SELL THE MF'er! Move on and start enjoying life. I have (just recently) learned there is more to life than a car.
