Rob will remember exactly, but '78s had polished trim ring on the door locks only, hatch was black. 928s went to black lock rings thereafter.

Yep, in '78 only the door lock bodies were chromed. 79-up, the proper finish is black anodized. Typically people will tape off the actual lock cylinder (a nickel is a good template for the piece of tape), scuff the old surface with 500 then 1000 grit, and paint with SEM self etching primer then Matte Trim Black. It happens that I did a pair of these yesterday - the paint finish is a little more textured than I'd like, but from more than 6 inches away they are an excellent match to the window trims (which I have powdercoated).

+Quite the study in contrast between the awkward, flared 924 Turbo against the flowing design of the OB 928. Completing the comparison is that they wear the same stunning color. Blumaxx looking fantastic!

Agreed on both counts!
The 928 is visually a much better designed car, especially in the original OB form. And that color really makes it pop!

I thought I posted this earlier, but I don't see it. I wonder if that's the Carrera GT tribute car that was on BaT last year? I loved that car actually, but it was too pricey for me.It had Fuchs by then, that filled out the rear fenders better, but they included pictures of it with the phone dials as well.

Hello. I just discovered this car via the Panorama article. Congratulations on this build; it is amazing!

I am undertaking a similarly ambitious project for a car that will be painted the same color and will also be known as Minerva.

However, in my case the car is a 1985 BMW 5-series. The car is getting a motor/transmission from a 2006 BMW M3 (S54 + 6-Speed). My build thread on the mye28.com forums is here: http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=137105

My inspiration for choosing Minerva Blue comes from a) I recall a Porsche 928 from my youth that was painted this color (or so I remember), b) I think Minerva's a great name for a car, and c) BMW actually painted ONE E28 (an M5) this color on a special order (Individual) car in 1987 (this car still exists, in Finland):


Anyway, I was wondering if you could tell me if you did any research into the various shades of Minerva that Porsche used over the years. The code that we believe was used on the M5 is W9W9 Minerva Blue Metalic. It sounds like your car came with, and you used in the restoration, 304 Minerva Blue Metallic.

Any details you can provide on your paint choice would be most appreciated (I tried searching this thread but it's quite long...I will keep reading it and maybe I'll find those details myself).

Wow, that E28M5 is stunning! Love those cars...

William is traveling for business right now, he's got the details on the exact paint system used, but I can tell you they used one of the PPG systems. He'll chime in with particulars as soon as he can. Here's a shot of the color code book from the painter's, consistent with the listed color codes in the 1978 workshop manual:

Thanks for the details. The original paint code sticker appears to say "W9". Did you get the whole sticker reproduced? I'd love to see it. Cheers.

Oh wow. That's a great, super clean Cruiser! Really like that you kept the original engine. Way too many SBC swaps have been done IMO. And just to keep this a little less hijacky, here is my Land Cruiser jump starting my 928. Sorry Rob. Carry on.

I did, although the original is so faded that I wasn't confident whether the repro is accurate. PET is lousy about the paint sticker part numbers- CarBone has a nice array of reproductions that cover three generations of stickers- 928 701 167 02/03/04, ostensibly to cover '78s. But the font on Minerva's sticker is different, and I'm not confident that there's a border around it with the part number (it may have been there and just faded into oblivion...) Earlier Porsches used these 'border-less' stickers, would be interested to hear from other early '78 owners what their stickers look like.

Like Rob, I too am a big E28 fan as a multiple BMW owner, both vintage and late model.

Since Rob's info above needs no repeating, I can add that we used the PPG matched Minerva Blue Metallic 304. Our painter has a close relationship with PPG and the color they provided was a spot on match.
