Little confusion, lets clarify.
There was never an 89 944S, only 87 and 88, they were the S2 3.0L in 89. And because a 944S head doesn't have a holder for the timing assy for a v8 on the driver side head. Looking at the 928 S3 or S4 head. If on the drivers side it has that spot that sticks out. On the passanger head its at the rear of the head. . But a 944S can use the 928S4 head because that doesn't interfere with anything but engine compartment space at the firewall, and it's mounted on the passanger side for a 944.

You are thinking of the intake valves for the super rare base model 89 944 2.7 L 8v cylinder head. They have the bigger 48mm intake valve your looking for but the head is for a 104mm bore block. And all 944 2v head won't fit a 928 block because of the protruding water port that the 944 engine have. You could modify them if you wanted for the 2.5L 944 8v heads but that's the same valves as the the 928S head, and when your cutting up $1000 super rare heads that is an 8v head designed for a 104mm block that 928 never made it's almost more cost effective to get a S4 engine. The base model 944 from 1989 has the 2.7 head and was the only 8v head made to fit a 944 104mm bore block. In 89 all 944 engines went to a 104 mm bore but the 2.7L engine has the 2.5 crankshaft in it and a new 3.0 crankshaft was made for the 944S2 DOHC model.

If a 928 owner was so inclined to turbocharge and has a 16v engine they may be able to use the 944 turbo head (951) and modify the water port. I only suggest that because they have a built in ceramic exhaust port to handle the heat. It's important to check for cracks in the ceramic exhaust ports!

Here is a photo of the super rare 8v 89 944 2.7L head with the 48mm intake valve for referance.

Notice the bigger intake ports as well.

That water port is different from this 944 2.7L head to the 944 2.5 8v heads. Along with the 104mm bore vs 100mm.

The 944S was a 2.5 4v engine, heads very similar to the 928S4.

The 944S2 was a 3.0 4v engine. Heads were basically the same as the 944S but modified to fit the 944 3.0 block.

968 head was like the S2 but with 39mm intakes, larger ports, and modified tensioner boss for variocam.

928 cams come out, 944 cams go in.
What he said!

mark,
as humboldt mentioned...the 944 2.7 heads sell for about $1000 each!
and there are barely enough of them around for the 944 guys

however, the company in southern CA "SI valves" makes drop-in stainless valves for the 944 (and therefore 928) up to 48 or 49mm for ~$30 apiece. a few guys on the 944 turbo side are using their valves under heavy boost/high temperatures without issue.

got it.. .. still pullling for my 2 valve bretheren to get the most out of the 5 liter hybrids. i guess the best way is to just take the intake ports , put in new seats, and hog it out to fit the size you want. 48mm on a euro head. its only 8 valves. how much could it cost? 100bucks a hole? well worth it.
anyway, back to the discussion ..sorry to interrupt.

Well I have done this as I have two 2.7 litre heads for the big stroker project. Thought I most well put those 48 mm valves to some use. The flow figures are in the thread.

Here's some pictures,
