Default What did you damage to your car today?

I had a particularly bad 928 day lateley. I suspect I am not the only one who has damged things while trying to fix it. The saying "fix it 'till it's broken" has been invented by someone with the same experience.
Therefore I vote for a new thread: "What did you damage to your car today?". I'll start with this weeks experience.
While trying to press in the wheel carrier into the new bearing in the rear hub, The wheel carrier misaligned because of the weight hanging down, when it reached the inside bearing race at halfway distance, it caught the edge and pushed the inside ballrace out. Obviously the bearing puller wasn't seated properly on the inside of the hub. Clearly not the proper tool for the job Now I learned the hard way!
I took out the hub to press the darn thing out again and start all over with a new bearing and proper tools.
And to make matters worse, I made a terrible scratch on the outer edge of the wheelarch of the freshly painted rearwing
Ouch! that hurts!

You scratched the wheel arch or the rear wing?

Sorry for my crappy english, I´m dutch so I act like I can speak english.

What I meant was the outer edge of the wing, where bodywork ends and wheelarch begins, I guess.
I scratched the paint off with some metal piece of tool

I've yet to successfully disconnect Bosch connectors without breaking at least one of them per batch.

Sometimes you have to break it to figure out how to get it apart so you can get it back together.

Well, here is how my year has gone: have 6 'P' cars, 3 928/3944. grey '86.5 a/c compressor bad ($1100 a/c parts waiting in rear hatch area. '81 (down since dec 24th rear main seal out and small anti-freeze leak (think bridge, but not positive) 944s2 cab clutch/slave cylinder bad, timed out on belt service $1700 parts in trunk waiting. '84 944 a/c low, leaking somewhere. '87 944 auto cam tower blew out and leak of antifreeze somewhere (also time for belt change)

Worst part is I cannot seem to get excited about any of them lately. On the plus side the red '86.5 is running great! Shocks are ordered for all the 928's and when back where they should be will seriously think of getting rid of some cars.

Ad0911 if paint is newer then perhaps the painter can fix fairly easy? Something like this happening is one reason I haven't begun repairs myself. As for the rear bearing all I can say is welcome to the club. I managed the same destruction years ago on the red car. It was a good lesson to not use bad equipment (our press at time was NOT good) and there are some things that need be done (gotta pay for it) correctly by people that know.

Default ooooo good one

This is like a confessions thread...you should have to post a refereed good one before being allowed to view the others..

Somehow the usernames are already sorting themselves in my head regarding who will have/share good stories, and who we'll seldom see except to offer recriminations.. And, the few all stars that just offer great tips to avoid such mishaps.
This could be good...

It wasn't today, but my personal favorite is:

While replacing the small triangular plastic piece on the upper door that directs the window to close correctly at speed, I had the window down to install the new plastic piece. The screw that holds the triangular plastic piece is necessarily very short and small. Of course, it jumped off my screwdriver and fell into the window slot and to the bottom of the inside of the door.

The VERY NEXT DAY, Mrmerlin posted about placing a towel on top of the window slot so that the little screw doesn't fall into the inside of the door. What are the chances of that?

The screw still resides in the bottom inside of the passenger door until I get the urge to remove the door panel on that side for additional work. I'll get it then at that point.

Didn't damage the car, but you could imagine the moment.
Was the first time I did a manifold pull. Did all the stuff one has to do, and buttoned her back. Go to start, and was not with success. That was the first moment of 'Oh Boy'. Did more sleuthing and found I had forgot to re-attach the electrical connector to the throttle switch. That was the looking at the ceiling moment. You know the rest.

Put a magnet on a string and try fishing it out, a lot easier with non magnetic aluminum doors, although you will have to work to avoid some of the bits that are magnetic, none of them are at the bottom of the door where the screw now resides.

I was fishing one out from under the intake as soon as I got past the fuel rails the only other issue was the knock sensors and bolts.

Funny, nobody said they damaged the car's feelings while fighting with the 928 or the better half for the wallet to buy boxes of stuff for the petulant 928 child..!!

Jumper-ed the fuel relay so I could run some Techron thru my K-Jet to try and de-gunk the system.Ran the pump for 30 minutes, Now it's hydro-locked!! SO-- Now I'll wait a few hours and see if it will crank over. It went from not wanting to idle when hot to not turning over AT ALL!!! All my plugs were covered with dry carbon so I think it's too rich at idle when hot.. At least I'm not burning oil. LOL. It went from running good to no hot idle in TWO DAYS, so I think the fuel system is plugged up.
