Default Fuel Pump S3

Am I making this too difficult, or are there some subtle tricks a grey beard can anoint upon me?

The back story is that I'm chasing down a possible fuel delivery issue based on Dyno testing last week.
Replacing FP and crush rings, Filter, and hose from tank WYAIT.

Install went fine, but while I'm running car to check everything before I button it up -- noticed a drop of fuel formed on the outside of the banjo fitting.

Then I decide to torque a little more.... then I got a real pressurized leak.

So I'm draining the tank and pulling everything back off.
My concern is that the leak seemed to be at the seam on the hard line at the banjo fitting (have looked this up yet on PET, but its the s line that runs from the pump to the filter). Even if I can't find a tear on it, I reluctant to trust it again with pressurized fuel involved. So I guess I will be replacing it.

I remember someone saying he assembled everything on a bench and then put the rack back on the bushing mounts for final assembly. Is that the best way to go? It seems difficult to torque the cap nut with nothing clean to counter hold it on the pump. And then what torque are we talking about, since I already ham fisted the first one?
Thanks ahead of time.

Both the metal fuel tube, and the check valve can be deformed from overtorquing. There is a good thread on here with Stan's step by step. I'd bet the metal tube is cracked.

My wrench stocked the S pipe as a consumable. I also change filters on the bench - the only down side is the R&R of the electrical connections. New copper washers are a must.

No "visable" cracks or defects last night on the S line, can't rule out pinpoint defect in seam. Check valve was loose, however.
Call is in to Roger.

Funny story, actually dialed Roger Moore by mistake. The cards in my Roladex must have been out of order.
Anyway, it turns out that he knows Mr. Tyson from back in the day, they actually worked on some projects together in the mid-80's.

She is buttoned up with a new S hard line, and did fine this time. I did the check valve and banjo fittings on the bench and then the rest mounted on the car.

The only set back was that I could not find my new crush rings this morning, really frustrating.
So I go down to O'Reily's, and ask the slob behind the counter if they have any crush rings.

He says "What's that?"
I look around to see if anybody with any experience at all is working on the floor-- no one else is around, so I explain the fitting and the concept to him.
He says: "I wonder if you could just use a flat washer."

I'm like, hey ********, it's pressurized fuel, and your going to kill somebody with your stupidity.
