Default Steering locked while driving - power steering issue?

A couple of times I noticed an odd event, when turning left my steering will lock for a split second.

I was in a long sweeping turn to the left and the steering suddenly stuck and I had to reef on it to follow my turn line. I was doing about 60mph

then I was putting it away in the underground parking, backing into my stall turning left again the steering lock for a split second.

Its an 82 5-speed, 60k on it, in great condition no known issues other than this steering business.

It happens without warning and is not predictable

Anyone have this happen to them?

Probably a sticking valve in the power steering rack. I used to have a similar problem on my late 90 S4 just after I purchased it in 1998. I would try to turn the steering [left?] and it would suddenly go hard to turn, it did not lock up - just hard to turn- classic sign of power steering system failure. Just as quickly as it would happen it would clear until the next event and it always happened on the same side- never the other side.

I was offered a nearly new rack for peanuts from a 928 that was about to be scrapped and it solved the problem.

Sounds as though it may be time for you to consider a refurbed rack from one of our heroes. Maybe someone has a fix for the problem- i.e. flush with some kind of cure all snake elixer?

Rgds

I would replace the power steering reservoir and drain the rack from the banjo bolt , also replace the curved line and the return line short hose.
NOTE turn the wheels back and forth a few times to eject as much fluid as possible.
NOTE use new sealing washers,
refill with Dextron , no need for any cleaners ,
if this doesnt work then the rack should be replaced.

I would suggest to use a rack from either 928 INTL OR 928sRus .
check shipping prices and core charges

Stan,

I know the Luftwaffe pilots would have liked to have had Spitfires but I had no idea they actually had a squadron of P-51's--

Since when did the Luftwaffe have swastika's on their tail fins- the advent of photoshop?

Wow, how timely. This exact same thing happened to me on the return trip from Hell. Same left turn and every thing. Thanks Stan, will follow your advice.

Time for a steering rack rebuild. Give Doc Brown a call.

Check your power steering belt tightness?

I had it stick going to the right in my left-hand drive car when the engine yawed over and the exhaust manifold (an '85) touched the tip of a bolt in the U-joint. Reversed the bolt and the head was short enough so there was no contact. True!

Your case sounds like a loose belt or sticking power assist in the rack itself.

thanks for your help guys

I am going to get under the car this weekend and start looking around for anything obvious and change the steering fluid

I checked the belt for wear, loose, oil. it looked fine.

interesting story about the steering u-joint. I will check that too.

Happened to me yesterday (and continuing today). It'll be interesting to see if I can get it to go away using some of the tips provided by Stan (in this thread) and Greg (in one of the threads that Rob linked).

FWIW, my rack was replaced 13 months ago.

Spool valve, most of the time.

New filter, new fluid, flush out the old fluid. Hold at lock both directions. It may pass the piece of debris.

Could it also be related to a worn ignition key barrel? If the key is loose in the ignition barrel due to decades of use, I suspect the wheel could lock while turning, as it doesn't realize the key is in place.
