Do you guys want the 928 to be affordable or to be worth something? Can't have both. There are enough 928's rusting under tarps in the back yard, suppressing prices that you don't have to worry about the average 928 being worth what the average 911 is worth in the market. If it costs $15,000 for a no needs example of any year 928, when a buyer sees a $2500 clunker.. that's going to drive down the price of the $10k example. "It only needs $5k of work to get it to look that good...

Furthermore, if being a 928 owner means you have to 1) be mechanically inclined 2) have a lift in your garage and 3) have the physical ability to work on your car.. that's a very very small proportion of Porsche owners. And those guys aren't going to be paying top dollar for a 928. If you have to have the above to take care of a 928.. a very small proportion of buyers will be up to the task.

I blame THAT car and linderpat for getting me into this mess. I didn't know that I needed a 928 until I saw BlueMaxx in the Dec. 2013 issue of HS&E...

If 0.001% of the US population qualifies, that would be enough to take care of every 928 ever imported...

Rick,

Lots of other things contribute to senility, but a 550+ ft lb torque, 525 hp car DOES NOT!!! - Ha.

Howver, selling a 928 GTS and buying a 41 year old bayemvay probably does define senility. As I told the new GTS owner, it's kind of like going from a nice laptop to an abacus.

See you in September at Frenzy.

The reality of the publication business is that they choose to showcase the exceptional examples, as Ed's car certainly is. Rich & Betsy Andrade's GTS made a cover too, another exceptional example. If there was a good barn-find-to-concourse story car, it would easily make it to publication. Even Panorama editors have shared that they look for these cars and stories.

What they don't cover is neglected cars being brought to some less-neglected "acceptable" level, perhaps a level where the things that don't work aren't seriouly affecting the car's drivabilty. "Acceptable" covers a really broad spectrum of cars and owners. For publication consideration, it's a tiny slice of the upper end of most folks' "acceptable".

This thread celebrates the publication of Ed's extremely rare-condition car. If you desire the same consideration, you'll probably need a similarly rare-condition example.

Timely thread! Believe it or not, i missed reading this issue of Hemmings that was delivered to me back in dec '13. I go a few months not reading my mags and so have quite a backlog sometimes. Anyways, discovered this issue just two days ago and read it for the first time. I guess it just stayed at the bottom of my mag rotation in the throne room. TMI maybe.
