Default Anyone ever see ECU chips like these? What are 'Thompson Cams'?
Back when I bought my car, it came with this box in the glovebox. The chips were already in the car, and I've never taken them out to compare to the stock chips.
Has anyone seen chips come in a blue box like this? Has anyone heard of Thompson Cams?
What could 'CHIPSET BEST UPRAIL(SP?) BEFORE CAMS' mean?
Anyways... just a little curiosity I wanted to see if anyone could shed some light on.
You sure the boxes are for 928 stuff? The "Oct 94" bit makes me think its not for 928 - given that whoever owned your car would probably have known the GTS had a bigger engine.
As to whats installed - you'll only find out by having a look, which is worth doing anyway so you can inspect the inside of your LH ECU and see if its still original or is a rebuild. If the tile on it is original, I'd pre-emptively get it rebuilt before it strands you somewhere.
Sorry, I should have specified... the stock chips are in this box, and the re-programmed chips that came out of this box are in the car since I've purchased it. I've just never put the stock chips in to compare how the car feels.
Since octane rating is on the inside paper, I was thinking that perhaps Oct 94 designates October of 94, when the chips were programmed. I've been driving on them for 5 years now, so I know they're for the car.
Doesn't it say Chips for OCT94 min - i.e. minimum 94 Octane petrol - This would make sense as most of the after market chips e.g. Autothority generally had too much ign. advance added.
I forget the difference between the US way of specifying Octane and the RoW way and hence which is the higher number for a given fuel.
Any chance "Thompson" cams is referring to Marc "Thomas" (Devek) cams?
No,
The Thompson grind was done by Dema at Elgin cams. I believe it was similar to a grind used on 944's at the time. Rob Edwards may have more info on it as I gave him all my old cam info
Mark, that sounds like a very plausible explanation!! Any more details on the Thompson grind? I know you mentioned Rob Edwards having more info. I can contact him if you provide a method.
Mark gave me a couple of boxes of 'race' cams a few weeks ago, about 5 sets. I'm putting together a rig to be able to degree them and figure out lift and duration. Bought a copy of Cam Analyzer software so I can make plots of all the stock cams and the race stuff Mark gave me to measure. Will report back when I figure out what's what.
