Need Help - '87 928s4
I agreed in principle to purchase an '87 s4 today!! I would like any opinions you guys can offer. It is located in Ft. Washington, PA. and has been registered in Bridgewater, NJ, New Hope, PA and then Ambler, PA.
It is a black/black, 5spd, 77K miles, number 942 for the model year, great condition, dash perfect, leather perfect, new timing belt & water pump, factory radar detector (are these any good nowadays?), engine & tranny seem fine, good paint, no dents/dings, etc. Great car all around. The catch - $13,000. What do you think?? Good deal, not good? Any issues with the first S4s that I should know about?? Thank you very much for your help. If it all works out you'll find me on this forum A LOT.

Congratulations and welcome! Sounds like a good deal / good price if you can verify the service history. A pre-purchase inspection by a 928 mechanic is always a good idea.

Does it have the rare early 87, flip up wing in the back?(pre 1000 it just may) Some of the earlier 87 cars had the flip up wing...more a novelty than anything. Sure makes cleaning the lower half of the hatch glasss easier though!
good records??...good mileage...seems like a fair price actually. Give it a good look over, ...airconditioning, front a rear(if it has it) ...flip and turn EVERY switch in the car.....pop the trunk and dig into the spare tire well and have a look. Run your hands down in the back seat..front seats...you will amazed what you may find. Receipts...pieces of broken glass!! Look closely at the rubber trim, more specifically where it meets the paint on the body, this is were a paint job WILL show up, as well as overspray UNDER the car.
Best bet, have someone knowledgable about the cars with you.
If its the car you want...go for it!

Take it somewhere and put it on a lift and take a long good look underneath. I missed a few thing by not doing this on my first car. As Tony said turn every dial and ****, and see what works and what doesn't. Check all the running lights. Look up a local Rennlister and see if he will meet you there and help look the car over with you.

Sounds good. Be sure to check on the under car panels. Since you are soo low to the ground, if you run over a can it can tear up the alternator shroud. Ask me how I know.

You can try Dinardo's Foreign Motors which is at 241 Horsham Rd (Rt 611) in Horsham 215-443-5335. Never took mine there for service, but I heard his knows 928s. I did speak to him once over the phone, and he had given me good advise. There is also Tillman's in Phila and Hobarts off of 202 in Chester or Delware County. I know both of these places to be very good. I have mine serviced in Kutztown, but that's over an hour from Ft Washington. I'm in the Pottstown /Reading area.

Capt'n Earl Gillstrom lives just south of Philadelphia, and is one of the more knowledgeable 928 owners. He does some 928 work on the side, and might be persuaded to look at it with you for a modest fee...
