Default Oil Breather Hoses S4

Hi. Can anyone confirm if the two oil breather hoses that go over the cam cover and under the intake connect to the base of the oil filler?

As per the pic about half way down on Dawynes fillerneck and waterbridge write-up

http://dwaynesgarage.norcal928.org/f...aterbridge.htm

One of mine has a large rip in it. I'm thinking about following Dwaynes write-up and while the waterbridge is out of the way feeding new hoses through.

The front one attaches at the oil filler neck, the rear one attaches at the Y on the MAF boot. On that Y there is a split where another hose goes to the filler neck also.

Thanks Sean. It is the front one in particular that i am after. I think I also have a leak at the filler so this job would kill two birds.

Mike,

You might be able to get at the front hose with the water bridge off- I suspect it will be very tight as there is little space to work in there but the rear one has to have the manifold off to do it. For the front one it may also be constrained by the orientation of the jubilee clamp holding it.

Bottom line if one hose has gone chances are the others are in no better state unless you know otherwise.

Fred
Best to remove the manifold and not just bridge work.

I know a intake refresh is on the cards soon but the car has been off the road long enough this summer and I really want to get it back up and running asap as Im planning a few trips soon.

Worst case if I can't route the hose back through I may route a hose around the front temporarily. I actually just saw a picture of a GTS with the hose routed around the front

Mike,

The GTS has a different breather design altogether and the general consensus is that it is utter crap. Even Porsche could not make up their mind what to do with it and had a few iterations- probably because as they threw the GTS out they realised they had other issues. I made the mistake of converting to the GTS breather system because I had the filler neck and wanted the motor to outwardly appear as though it were a GTS motor. When converting to my current breather system I cannibalised the original S4 filler neck- a mistake- I should have used the GTS neck.

Neither of these systems is perfect [far from it] but the consensus is that the S4 works better but then the GTS has other issue issues in its configuration such as the pistons that have no oil drains in the scraper land and counterweight geometry possibly causing inter-bay breathing issues.

Appreciate your desire to get motoring but considering all you have done to date I suspect you are overly concerned about removing the inlet manifold. I can have mine off and back on again in a good afternoon providing nothing untoward happens- just seems to make sense to "just do it" and get it over with.

Rgds

Routing a hose around the front would be a last resort. I've been looking at some pics online and getting a replacement hose in with the coolant bridge out looks doable.

I know if I try and tackle the intake now I'll find other thinks I need to do. For instance I think I need to remove the fuel rails an will bet half the injector plugs break. I broke one already removing the fuel line. I'll probably also want to send the injectors off for cleaning.

As well as wanting to use the car this summer the garage I rent is up for sale and I may need to relocate at short notice. If i can even find a garage to relocate to as Edinburgh city centre garages are like gold dust. On top of that I'll be moving house sometime this year. Now is a bad time . It will take me weeks of ordering additional parts, new tools to tackle certain jobs etc. The parts for the water bridge job and new hose are ordered. Going for it.

Just did this today and yes the front oil breather can be replaced easily once the coolant bridge is out of the way.

Here's a pic of the damaged hose and the messy oil

There was about a cupful of oil down in that valley bit. I think the oil filler was also leaking so that has been done too. Coolant wasn't leaking but the gaskets were totally done so I'm pleased I did this.

Dwaynes coolant bridge write up was very helpful. The only bit that was a problem on disassembly was the one hard to reach bolt. Dwayne was able to get an Allen key strait in there but on my car the intake sits too far forward. Perhaps a slight difference in model years. I did however get a ball ended Allen key in there at an angle and was able to get the bolt.
