Default Clutch job on 78

Hi guys,

Does this gap on the shafts look correct for a shaft seated in the pilot.

Just want to make sure before I bolt everything up.

Thanks

Christian

the gap looks a little big.

what I did was with the rear pinch bolt loose I positioned the front clamp so that the bolts easily fitted on the main and stub shafts by hand by adjusting the shaft position. I then went back to the rear pinch bolt torqued it, followed by the front main shaft bolt and then the sub shaft pinch bolt.

I believe this method correctly positions both shafts in relation to each other, the stub shaft and pilot bearing and the main shaft to the gearbox input.

Thanks guys,

Big is not a problem since that means that it is probably pushed all the way to the front in the pilot.

I was just worried that I "lost" the most forward clutch disc on the shaft and that the shaft was not inserted in the pilot. Tollerances are tight on these things and so is visibility when working.

When even old Porsche guys doubt themselves then you know that the finest Porsche engineers have been designing it

Cheers,

Christian

The gap is larger because the shaft is in the pilot bearing. Once he gets the coupler in place that gap will be smaller because the intermediate shaft will be pulled rearward.

absolutely correct my man

Never quite understood the relationship between the shafts/clutch and gbox until I did the TT/clutch r&r; all makes sense now

Think i just pushed the pilot in putting too much leverage to seat the coupler.

Back to square one.

Having worked for many years on my other Porsches I have to say that this is not for amateurs.

How far can you push inn the pilot with the shaft anyway? Shaft wont move now.

Sad greetings,

Christian

Alarm is off. One of the u clamps on the PP had loosned screwing up allignment.

But is it possible to push the pilot too much in when pulling the coupler forward. Could not reach the rear end coupler bolt on. Cant get the coupler foreard enough.

the coupler should glide from the main shaft to the stub shaft......put the gbox in neutral so the main shaft will spin then with the coupler close to the stub, turn the coupler so it aligns and slides onto the stub.

Now position the coupler so it lines up with the groove in the main shaft, install the pinch bolt by hand then slide the stub shaft rearward until its grove lines up with the cutaway in the coupler, install the pinch bolt by hand then torque all 3 starting with the rear.

New problem. Removed the U's and still have a gap. Is that right with new clutch discs?

You will have a gap as they take up for the loss of clutch disk material as it is used.

It may be too late, but when I had difficulties with my clutch last spring, I got a boatload of help from the guys on here.

Stan gave me some very good advice for getting the short shaft positioned correctly in the pilot bearing.

Seems that everything is in order and the clutch action seems smooth.

Too bad I gave the new owner a discount in the price to have the clutch adjusted at Porsche before I even tied it - I need to be more confident

Thanks all.
