In my work day life, the better you are at research and taking that research and turning it into knowledge - the better you are full stop. But I still feel that little replaces earned experience. I am redoing things I did on these cars 12 years ago that I know I did wrong - merely from the added time and effort since then on similar tasks.

And I still regularly screw stuff up. Of course I can agree with the op's intent. But I dotnt think it can actually replace the kind of applied hands on learning that people like gb and others have gotten over time. That is my point in so many words - I don't see a short cut for time.

No. The review standards and most importantly the liability assumed for any nuclear project are way too steep for a retired hobbyist like me to take on.

One of the great values of this list it is the ability for others to share not only what they do right but also the costs of not doing it right. We get the benefit of education without the cost of experience.

You can't beat education , and you can't beat free wisdom.
You get both here ,and with the search function , there really isn't anything you can't tackle.

Default 928 Owners Club support for 928 Repair Archive

Hi 928ers, Marc White here, 928 OC VP. This is a topic that would surely be valuable to the new guys as well as many of the old guard by actually featuring info, tips, sites, links, etc. to the world of 928 experience out there in a searchable fashion. One that actually yields some results… Thanks to Bill Van Vlack and the 928 OC Board, this subject has been highlighted again and we are in agreement this has real merit.

We are not sure what the next steps might be, but the OC would like to support the 928 community by offering its website to be used for permanent storage and presentation of the information created for a 928 Repair Archive as discussed in this thread, for use by any 928 owner or enthusiast.

We have volunteer resources that can help the team that creates this information present it pretty much any way imaginable, and train the team in how to create, add, modify and manage the information.

It has been suggested a Wiki-type format allowing all to enter their tips and wisdom, vetted by those that know and set up in a way that works be studied. Other ideas present the info as library items to be archived. Others have suggested supplementing the work shop manual.

As the method evolves we could reach out for content from the authors. We could ask for links to already existing sites with tons of great info to bring into the archives. Let’s see how this can eventually be a tremendous resource for our community.

In any case the OC will support whatever consensus evolves.

Thanks All,

Marc

Nuke Plants? Nuke plants. I used to work in nuke plants.

That should scare the spit out of the entire nation.

I'll tell you a little secret. Nuke plant control is 10 times simpler than the electrical system of a 928 S4. It's actually quite simple in most respects. the only complex stuff has to do with the beta-backscattering detectors. Mostly they use scintillating fluids and photo-multiplier counters to detect the by-products of Uranium reduction isotopes.

Back in the day, I used to fly around the country with a little test pellet of Cf-252 in my case, wrapped in some LiOH plasticizer base. Oh, we had fun with that thing! hehehehheheheeee

Nuke plant controls still depend to an overwhelmingly large extent on the education and experience of the operators. It takes more than a casual amount of specific education and experience to gain senior reactor operator status. For the non-nuke world, the standards are a lot more, um, relaxed. To the point where there are no standards beyond a claim that you have "done it before". That's a better market for me, where it's easy to mine the experiences of many to help educate the rest. On the way, once best-practices can be defined well, it's fairly simple to implement those in a automated control strategy. We do the same things in the nuke industry, but update procedures and shared knowledge rather than letting an automatic system do the heavy day-to-day lifting. Good news is that we are finally adding redundant safety systems to help the reactor operators.

Now, back to diagnosing xx system problems in the 928...

Never had any interest in operations. Always worked in monitoring and controls. I still remember working in the pump room on a transducer at Ft St Vrain with the UHf6 slurry reactor when the alarm went off. I left a brown streak all the way THRU that solid steel door!

Ahh good times. Now -- back to our regularly scheduled programming.

We had a team meeting this morning and threw out the model idea - however we are going to try harder to become a 928 parts supplier.

Got it.
Maybe so, but if you did your searches using the Search Titles Only instead of Search Entire Posts option you would have a much better search experience.

Exactly. Back when I moderated this forum I would edit those useless titles to reflect the content of the post for exactly this reason.

One would think so, but - actually, no. Nothing on the actual dash replacement process. Pretty much all of them start out; 'I just finished the dash.....', or; 'I'm considering doing the dash...'.

The best, if only(?) source is the Nichols site. <edit: BTW, the Nichols site has a tips and tricks, but not the process. Failing that, it's back to the 9 volume WSM.>
