In typical me fashion, waiting for the last minute, I want AC for Frenzy, so I pulled the compressor today...my leak is on the discharge line just below the factory crimp on the compressor end. I epoxied and put a hose clamp over the hole prior to the Atlanta event. That held until I got home, but continued to leak oil and refrigerant. I have a replacement suction line, but not the discharge. I hope my local hydraulic shop can fix it or I am boned...I’ll find out tomorrow. The compressor is covered in oil and grease from the ruptured line. I’m going to flush the system and convert to 134a, since I have about 100# of it, and I am all out of 12.

anyone have experience with hydraulic shops and our AC hoses?

I took my hoses to Pirtek to be rebuilt with barrier hose. One thing I did not realize is that whatever cleaning method they used on the metal ends stripped off the cad plating leaving them clean bare metal. Surface rust began quickly especially on the hose that sweats. I have sprayed them with fluid film to stop the corrosion until I can remove them for painting. Next time I will just buy new ones, last I looked they were about $40 more than rebuilding.

So, Griffiths made the line I needed with Barrier hose, for $200 plus shipping....made and shipped yesterday, supposed to be at my house tomorrow. Pretty happy with the price, although it wasn’t in the budget. I will update on the quality and fitment, but I expect it to be up to snuff.

I found a shop in Florida that said they can make a replacement with barrier hose for 75$ and up, depending on who knows what. They would reuse my existing ends. I am thinking about sending it to them to get a firm price quote, and check out the quality. I have 3 of these cars, so I definitely need some extra hose....

so...so far Griffiths is the real deal! I wish I could have just ordered from Roger and been done with it, but my personal economic position will not allow.

there is a PIRTEK in charlotte...wonder if they could do it, and at what cost?...

I took my hoses to a local AC service shop where they easily and quickly replaced the rubber sections with barrier hose. The had a somewhat-portable crimping tool and replaced the rubber on the engine bay line in place. I bought lunch to make their house-call practical.

Both of your cooling fans, the mechanical via the fan clutch and the electric aux fan, must work flawlessly per design for you to safely run R134a in a warm climate. Mark Anderson at 928 International has some interesting replacement fan clutches to consider. Better in that they don't drain the silicone if not held with shaft horizontal, better in that they are fewer $$ than the Factory replacements.

Thanks for the info Doc. I believe both my fans are in top knick, but I am considering an all electric conversion.

Got the new hose today, put it in this evening. What a bear to reinstall the compressor. It took me 3 hours to get a mounting bolt to line up...got it in finally, all bolted up, connections made. Belts adjusted. Added a holding / trace charge of R22. Will add nitrogen tomorrow and leak check!

Had some problems with leakage, a problem of my own creation, where the knurled fitting I used on the suction line came loose, wouldn’t blow gas, but wouldn’t hold vacuum either...was a bitch to figure out...but...

Completed my half-assed 134 conversion...other than a slight problem with the compressor wiring, seems to be working ok...drove 8 miles with no explosion...

Replaced suction hose, o-rings on suction and discharge hoses, cleaned compressor, drained oil from compressor, refilled with Esther oil (good for 12 or 134), triple evacuated, pulled down to 400 microns, held for 10 mins...charged up and we have cold....for the moment...

I replaced xpansion valve and orings and drier last year, so I left those as is...if the system had been down and empty for years, I would have changed them, but it never went flat...

So far quite solid. Nice and cool. Hopefully it will hold for the journey to sterling.
