Default Front shift ball cup - Replace just bushing or whole rod?

Upcoming MM/OPG job and also going to replace the front shift ball cup to take up some slop in the shifting. Searching forums, it looks like two options.

Replace the whole "angular joint assembly" 928-424-005-01 for about $80

Or it seems that the insert can be replaced using the ball cup bushing for the clutch release, 928-116-145-03 for about $20.

Are most people just using the insert or is it an easier job just to get the whole assembly?

Thanks.

i did the insert. its pretty easy to squeeze in when you get the old one out. just make sure you mark the threads so you get the adjuster/cup back in the same position .

I bought just the cup........, twice. I buggered the first one up in the press during install. If I ever have to do it on another car I will buy the assembly.

I used Carl's aftermarket version and have been pleased with it thus far, FWIW.

Ditto here with Carl's metal one...transfers a bit more vibration but makes the action more precisioner

take the ball cup and have the shaft welded to the cup... its a cheap and dirty spot weld.... once that is done, the thing is bullet proof. ask me how i know.. the plastic insert works well too.

Just did one yesterday on my sons 78 getting it off was fun getting it on was hilarious. What worked for us was to remove shifter and rods, rotate ball cup to right and down. I had my son hold onto the front shaft inside the car while using a 17mm open end to loosen nut, count your threads. Clean the ball socket including the ridge on the inside edge, use a 15mm socket and press the nylon insert into the socket in a vise. Make sure nylon insert sits INSIDE THE BALL CUP or it will pop out once installed. To install we ended up using a strap, a board to attach the straps onto and a curved nail remover style pry bar. Some people say it pops right on not in our case we had just enough room to slip the strap over the ball cup and needed the pry bar to get it on. Due to the lack of room to tighten the nut I used a crows foot 17mm with a swivel with blue lock tight. A few choice words lots of muscle it popped on, world of difference on the way it feels, good luck.

I've been loathing this job for a long time now. I'm thinking: would it be easier to put the insert on the ball first?

that is not a good idea. the insert is held inside that little lip on the cup. if you you try it wit the cup on the ball first it will not be able to fit inside the lip. yo need the cup to compress.

That's what I was going to do insert on ball cup.. if you put insert in cup first do you have to take off the cup ?? Wire welder second option. mjh

Yes ... follow Tampa928s directions in his post above. The size of the socket to press the insert in is important, so that it pushes the center section fully home, and allows the ridge on the outside to pop in under the lip of the metal cup.

Don't use a welder .. just take it off, put the insert in, and put it back on.
