Default Digital dash - circuit board swap?

I have a '89 5 speed with the instrument cluster out of an automatic.

I also have the original instrument cluster that the PO told me was sent out for repair and returned as being "un-repairable."

So, the question is: is it possible to swap the circuit board/s from the good (auto) cluster into the bad (5 speed) cluster?

PO told me that the problem was the temp gauge swinging peg to peg causing a no start condition - if that makes sense....

James

James,

The panel is giving you feedback about what is going on in various parts of the car but as I am aware should be isolated from causing issues affecting the ability of the car to run - such decisions usually are made in the various on board computers. It is annoying when the gauges do not work properly but this is not likely to do any harm I would think.

Regards

Thanks Fred:

I didn't experience this myself - just repeating what the PO told me. The repair invoice just notes "temp gauge fluctuates."

James,

The gauges on the display unit seem very sensitive to signal issues- probably because there is not a whole lot of signal to start with. I am having issues with the oil pressure indication at the moment and a bugger of a job tracking down the problem [I am not too clever with electronic issues]. The tachometer in my current 928 and my previous 928 had signal breakdown at about 5k rpm. The engine revs through this mark perfectly and data in sharktuner logs confirms this. It annoys the hell out of me when gauges do not work properly -particularly tachometers but with high rev fuel cut off available do we really need a tachometer-?

I suspect you will find that the problem in your unit was more likely in the wiring somewhere but like anything in the electrical department, until you know for sure what the problem is do not dismiss anything.

Rgds

James -- Sterling Gee listed a 1989 manual-box digidash available in the last few days.

Here is a link to the referenced cluster currently for sale:

I don't have any good advice regarding the problems that you are having and don't have much experience with the digital dash assembly other than changing lights once long ago, but I am interested in the circuit boards from the "un-repairable" cluster. One of my whenever-I-get-around-to-it projects is to do some reverse engineering and I do not want to jeopardize a good unit.

Please PM me.

Yeah, that's what got me started on this - then I thought "wait a minute, I've got the original instrument cluster, maybe I can just swap the boards."

Don't think it's worth $750 just to get rid of the PRND32 - I don't even notice it any more and a little black tape would hide it from view (although, perhaps not the most elegant solution).

The boards come out fairly easily - they're just connected to the housing using push connectors, so swapping shouldn't be hard altho' I haven't tried swapping them between my clusters - I have a spare cluster as my car was originally in UK miles/gallons and I wanted a metric one for Australia.

Circuit boards are the same - manual and auto - also backward compatible if you buy a used later CB.
Remember the mileage cannot be changed (easily) so what is on the used board you have to live with.
Buy a new CB and you have about 200 miles to enter the correct mileage or it will default to zero.
