What motor oil do you use?
I would like to find out what brands are used and what weights, also synthetic vs. natural? And do you have any leaks from your oil pan? Thanks i'm going to change my oil and would like to know the best by consensus.

Tom,
I'm using Amsoil 20-50 synthetic. I don't have any leaks from my
oil pan, but I did replace my oil pan gasket in Nov of 2000, so it's
not original. I used Mobil 1 for a couple of years, but when the
engine got hot, my oil pressure would drop, so I decided to try
Amsoil. It doesn't have the pressure drop that I had with Mobil 1,
but it is a lot more expensive. So I won't recommend it for every
day driving, but on the track or ORR, it could save your engine.

I use plain 20-50 Pennzoil on the advice of a Porsche :
1) authority
2) mechanic
3) service manager
4) dealer
5) extraordinarily perceptive tech trained at the factory as an apprentice
6) unbelieveably knowledgeable Porsche guy
who told me to save my $$ and change oil/filter regularly. This guy just needs to walk by a Porsche blindfolded to sense what's right or wrong with it. Well... maybe not that perceptive, but I trust his opinion...and for me that's amazing.

Mobil 1 - 0W40 winter, 15W50 summer. I have never had an oil pressure issue, with either weight. Though, I would not recommend 15W50 if it's cold during the winter.
If you want the best race oils, run Royal Purple or Motul.

I use 10W 30 in my car and only drive in the summer. I have never been able to figure out oil guidlines. Is this the right oil weight to use? I have no leaks at all. I see you guys using 20 50 what is the advantage?

20w-50? 'cause that's what's spec'd for the car for use in moderate-to-hot ambient temperatures.
Some people have said that the newer oils provide as much wear protection at lower viscosities. I'm not sure if that is true or false, but I expect that it is right. I do like seeing the pressure needle pointing at 5 as much as possible. Thinner oils are, well, thinner and the pressure gauge lies infrequently.
With my high-mileage engine (150k+) and hard use, I go for the best I can find.
I used Castrol 20w-50 and that had lower pressures than Mobil 1 which had lower than the Amsoil.
Anyone know where to get the cheapest amsoil? I paying $8.25 for the racing stuff over-the-counter.

Like a previous poster mentioned, you can get that Amsoil at 20% off if you purchase the "preferred customer" discount from them for a year. I did that and saved over 200 dollars in one year. Yes, the stuff is not cheap, but I am happy to see others have seen good results. So your down to under 7 bucks per quart if you get the discount. They also do gearbox fluid, and bearing grease.

Mobil 1 15/50. My original mechanic admonished me for using it, and claimed that it would leak on a older car like mine So I changed mechanic, and my current mechanic who encourages the use of Redline (too expensive)a synthetic, and I've now been using Mobil 1 for 2 years without a leak

Amsoil 20-50 racing and Amsoil series 2000 75-90 in the tranny (LSD). I run about 7500 miles between oil changes now so It's not more expensive than running cheaper oil and changing every 3000 miles. The engine runs clean and I use stock oil and air filters.

Lubro Moly also makes a synthetic race version....I beleive the weight is something like a 15-60 so this may be an option.
I went with their normal synthetic because a local shop carried it. I didn't want to be strapped to having to get the oil mailed to me.
