Here's the other end. It's pooched. Guess it's a good thing I have a couple extra transmissions on hand.
ETA: Pulled the front flanges off two transmissions, one an '88 and one an '89 and they are different than the 86.5. Bummer, another few days wait now, no happy fathers day for the owner.

Here's what can happen if you don't check the rear pinch bolts and ignore a TT rattle.

I've seen them completely loose twice before on '85 and newer cars while checking the front clamp for the first time. No migration or rattles, but my thought at the time was that I had been fortunate to prevent those cars from certain catastrophe in the future. The POs had no idea how lucky they were.

Sean, since you have been servicing my car for the last five years, I will now hold you responsible for ANY issues that may arise from any previous work that you did and did not have the clairvoyance to see any possible future issues. I hope your crystal ball is working better now.
You're still the best around these parts.

That is like telling your dentist to pay for an appendectomy that your doctor over looked.

Talk about a no win situation...
Hey, I didn't ask you to tighten that bolt, screw you I'm not paying for that hour!
Hey, you should have used your 928 divinity and just know that bolt was loose! Now fix it for free!!
Obviously not talking about Brad at all, just "those" customers lol.
I know Brad must be eager to get his baby back, and that it wasn't something even more serious.

So with the bolt stretching and loosening, is there any guidance on using a better/tougher bolt that doesn't stretch? Those spline damage pics show that the bolt was loose or stretched enough to let the splines wedge the clamp open. It would seem prudent to replace with something a little less, um, elastic.
I admit that I've never bothered to even look at the rear clamp bolt. Never had any flex plate flex to release, so ASSumed that the same would apply to the rear. I've also ASSumed that the rear coupler was a bit more robust than what's represented here.
I think I had a new front clamp bolt on my wishlist, only because it's been in and out a few times and the hex in the head is not as hexy as it once was.

Would you ever check a front u-joint and not the rear?
And by the way, my dentist replaced a five year old crown that broke, at no charge.
