Default Super bit of history

You have a wonderful car ... keep it original and enjoy it.

I rescued a 1979 5-speed no sun roof 928 with only 56,000 miles that sat for 11 years in a garage, sadly the fuel had not been drained. I had to replace/rebuild everything in the fuel system and replace belts/hoses, clutch slave, and several small items. The AC blew cold when it started ... pretty amazing.

It is now running great ... like a 36 year old "new car" ... there is no comparison between this and my S4 or GTS ... but it has a personality of its own and illustrates just how Porsche can improve their cars over a decade.

Enjoy, I hope to see more photos!

Yes, normal

Battery light is on even though I got a new battery?? you'll need to check this further

there is a light in center of gauges in red looks like this <> that is on not sure what that means?
get the manual for your car - describes all of these things. It is a fairly thin item, not a tome like today's owner manuals. They are all uploaded online somewhere here.

There are 2 rotary switches on the floor between the drivers seat and door, Can't seem to figure out what they do????
described in the manual. One is a fader for the speaker. Is the car a Euro spec car? Don't know what the other one would be for.
Radio turns on but can't seem to change the channel or turn up volume.

No dash lights so cant see gauges in dark. (haven't checked fuses yet tomorrows job is interior cleaning and fuse checking)
again, in the manual. There is a rotory switch under the pod - dial it up to increase pod light intensity.

On a good note:

Headlights go up and down and turn on high beams work.
All exterior lights work except one marker light. (anyone know where to find a list of correct lamps for this car? Yep, owner's manual!I might as well see if they are the right ones when I am changing the bad one.)
Antenna goes up and down.
rear Windshield wiper works
Air conditioning still pumps cold air (I'm stoked!)
light in passenger vanity mirror works.
windows go up and down.
Temp does not seem to go up to the red although it only ran for 10 minutes.

Did I mention I can't get this damn smile off my face!
Great looking car. One thing I noticed in the pics you posted is newer clamps on some of the hoses. It may be possible that the fuel lines have been recently done. Somebody has been in there.

You'll find your manual at the top of the list below thanks to AO.

Do read the manual, there are some systems that aren't super obvious, but the ! is a central warning. It lights up when another warning light is lit, in this case, probably the battery.

If the ! lights and nothing else does, you've got a burned out bulb somewhere.

If the ! flashes, that's a critical warning like low oil pressure.

Making my way to the fuse box pictures. Why would that sticker be on the last photo?

Today's work was cleaning interior, made a cable for the battery tender so it will just plug in when not running.

Radio started working today also. it worked when I started it this morning.

Why would this be under drivers side dash?

Man, the more pictures you post, the nicer your car gets. That's a pretty cool phenomenon.

The '1593' on the piece of tape is probably the internal work number for the car during assembly. You might find the same number on the underside of some interior pieces, not that I'd go disassembling bits looking for it. Does it in ay way correspond to the VIN?

there was a big discussion of those tape numbers under the glove box awhile back. I have one too. Jim Doerr might chime in on this. I forget what they signify. Don't yank it off - someday it could be a valuable item from a historical perspective

Well I'm glad to hear that the tape is normal. The first thing that went through my mind was a scrap yard part number. Thinking the original owner may not have disclosed everything about the car.

Thanks for the kind words about the car. It supprise me daily on how well it was taken care of.

Not much left for me to do to it. Finish changing fluids, it needs a power steering line and order and change the front fuel lines. Then she will be back on the road for a few short trips.

Almost forgot the only thing I see wrong with the intirior is there are no dash lights. Well all the red lights work I am assuming there is some sort of light to see the tachometer and mph gage. Can anyone point me to some documation on figuring that out. All the fuses are good in the car.

Probably a bad contact on the potentiometer. The dimmer is on the left side of the column at the bottom of the pod. The other potentiometer on the right side controls intermittent wiper delay. Just play with the dimmer a minute and it will probably take life again.

Roll the gauge dimmer back and for a few times and the light might come alive. Sometimes corrosion build up at the position it was sitting and won;t let current flow through it. The dimmer is under the gauge pod, left of the steering wheel and sits vertically. Only about a 3rd of the dimmer "wheel" is visible.

+1 when the dimmer doesn't change positions often enough this is usually the result.

Ok I took out the switch and cleaned it. Question is... is the spring supposed to stay down in the channel or pop up and contact the metal bar? If I push it back into the channel when I move the roter the spring pops out of the channel making contact.

I hope I sent the correct 2 pictures working from my phone today Internet is down.

Where doe the wires connect to? I believe that spring is the variable resistance, depending on where the "wiper" part is contacting it....changing the length of spring between wiper and wherever the other contact is determines resistance. If that other contact is the metal bar, then it should be touching the spring. I can't tell from the pics.
