Fuel lines are a touchy subject. The problem is that if they aren't right, the car can easily go up in flames.

"Good enough" is questionable.

Greg's are supposed to be works of art. He's a true craftsman, and backs them up with a genuine lifetime warranty.
I think they are available through Roger at 928s R Us. He's a very good guy to work with.

I think Carl (928Motorsports) stopped making the lines in that thread. IIRC, it was due to liability issues.

He offers a kit that is line, clamps and a clamp crimping tool. You make your own lines.
Some think that's good enough. Others disagree. Like I said, it's a touchy subject.

Finding a shop to make or rebuild these lines can be difficult. Many (most?) shops that will happily rebuild hydraulic lines that need to carry thousands of pounds of pressure will balk at lines that are intended to carry gasoline. The liability from them is too risky.

I wouldn't use braided hose for the fuel lines - they destroy anything they rub against.

I recommend talking to Jim Doerr of 928 Classics - any restorative work on your car should be sympathetic to preserving the originality. He's done more research into early cars than pretty much anyone, and will know the best source of parts for early 928s, plus he sells a few kits for early 928s.

Also, anything that comes off the car, including old fuel lines, should probably be tagged and bagged and stored, not chucked.

well here is my last option. my mechanic looked at all the lines today the one who can make them for me. He was like they look like new anyhow do you have to change them? then i told them about the worries of this car catching fire. even the rubber lines in the engine compartment on the passenger side look like new no dry rot or nothing.

everyone has me scared now and wanting to replace them. But i do want to keep the car as original as possible because as far as I know the paint and someone said the exhaust ( I was not told about the non stock exhaust. It had to be done by the first owner possibly when it raced the autobahn which is documented) are the only thing changed.

The only rot I found was a little crack on the bottom of the gasket that goes between the fuel tank at the cap and the car. The rubber gasket has a small crack on the bottom i'm guessing from the fuel leaking on it over the years.

BTW I was asked earlier in this post for the Vin# I will give that as soon as the title is in my hands. I have the car and will be traveling to see family and I will get title on the 4th.

I am real curious as what i can find out. the original owner talked it up when they sold it.
story was
first 928 in the us
Raced a race on Autobahn or something
it came with a Stirling silver trophy for something lol maybe the race??
I think it had a book documenting the cars history or something.

I will know more in a few weeks when I return or i will post while on vacation as im excited to find out about this.

It would be a good idea to get new fuel lines. If you plan on driving the car, safety items should be exempt from "originality" concerns.

You wouldn't run on 37 year old tires, would you? You can save the original lines in your garage for if it ever has to go into a museum.

You need to get a coolant in there suitable for our engines. Take any one of your choice that is phosphate and silicate free.

I don't want to spook you but I've seen a number of these engines ruined by unattended cooling systems full of the conventional green stuff. The coolant can literally eat holes through the bores of the engine.

Awesome early example by the way! Looking forward to your progress.

Fuel tank cleaned and back in today. The ATF has been sitting in the cylinders for about 24 hours now. Going to see if I can get a battery to run the fuel pumps.

some pics of the spare tire. It is defiantly a weird looking thing.

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!

After looking it over and over. I put the battery in today ran the fuel pump had one little leak in the pump under the tank. Tightened the bolt a bit and that was it.

turned over the engine by hand, turned it over on battery with no plugs.
installed plugs and wires and air filter.

Cranked it over started in about 5 seconds stumbled a bit, stalled.
Cranked her again and fired right up smoked like a freight train for about 3 min.

she is purring like a kitten now!

A walk around video of her running is uploading now.

Questions:

Oil Pressure is at 3 when at idol and goes up to 5 when giving it gas. Is this normal?

Battery light is on even though I got a new battery??

there is a light in center of gauges in red looks like this <> that is on not sure what that means?

There are 2 rotary switches on the floor between the drivers seat and door, Can't seem to figure out what they do????

Radio turns on but can't seem to change the channel or turn up volume.

No dash lights so cant see gauges in dark. (haven't checked fuses yet tomorrows job is interior cleaning and fuse checking)

On a good note:

Headlights go up and down and turn on high beams work.
All exterior lights work except one marker light. (anyone know where to find a list of correct lamps for this car? I might as well see if they are the right ones when I am changing the bad one.)
Antenna goes up and down.
rear Windshield wiper works
Air conditioning still pumps cold air (I'm stoked!)
light in passenger vanity mirror works.
windows go up and down.
Temp does not seem to go up to the red although it only ran for 10 minutes.

Did I mention I can't get this damn smile off my face!
