928 or 996

I currently have both but must choose. 2000 996 cabrio C2 tiptronoc vs 1984 928S auto. Both in good condition. Driving the 928 is like dating an aging super model. Everyone knows her work. It's been fun. But the 996 has power and handling. My last porsche was a 944 and it was very magic on an autocross course. I'm jonesing to do more autocross. But the 928 is a pig at that. Decisions and thoughts please share.

Tell me you know and accept all the engine limitations and trans limitations of the 996 when run hard. If you can do that, sell the 928 and hit the track. If you can't, sell them both and get a 944T for peanuts and go have tons o fun.

IMS bearing, cyl liners, AOS overwhelmed and puking, oil starvation in corners, lifters. That's a start. If you don't know about them, head over to the 996 forum, search on Jake Raby. Plenty of info avail.

No trick. I have a 2000 that thinking of keeping. The 2003 is what replaxed it. The 2003 is my wife's and she doesn't autocross. Thinking of selling the 928 and having the 996 as my daily and occasional autocross. I've auto crossed the 928 and it's no fun. I've spent 2 years maintaining the 928 and there is always something. In the same two years the 2000 996 has just been oil changes and that's it. I've read all the **** about the IMS bearing and frankly after talking with many Porsche experts believe that mostly happens to cars that don't get driven a lot. In autocross mode do I have to worry about oil starvation? No track stuff. 99 percent daily drive. 1 percent autocross. The 928 atreet drives like a dream but it's 31 years old. It's been like girlfriend with a crack habit thAt always is asking for your wallet.

I think that the old issues with the 928 being heavy are sort of mute at this point. A 3500 pound car is light. People are tracking 4300 pound cameros.
Now an auto 928 is not live on the track. But an older 996 is also not very powerful even by porsche standards.

If we are going to go that route, why go with a 944? I'd start looking at cars like the Subaru BRZ.

Oh and I have driven the 996 several times, but never a turbo, and not newer than 2004. I was... underwhelmed. Not that I ever even think the 928 is perfect or somehow overall better - just that for what the 996 is held as - nothing special if not gutless.
