Default Bilstein shocks

I am going to get hold of the Bilstein
F4 B46 0966 HD and F4 B46 0974 HD.

I am thinking to install them with my stock springs. Are they any good? Will it be too harsh on street road?
My 91 S4 is all stock and with 17 inches cup 1 wheels.

Cheers

Kevin you will lose some ride quality for certain. We have sets for $928.

I believe that my S4 has the stock shocks and springs. Do I need any extra hardware to put on these Bilstein or it is just a plug and play?
Thks.

Bilstein's come complete with the threaded sleeve, adjusting nut and lower spring perch - so yes literally plug and play.
I would also recommend changing the four bump stops.

FWIW inspect the plastic dust covers if they appear to have cracks then have a few on hand to swap in.

also as Roger said replace the bump stops the fronts are different than the rears,
and also the flat plastic washers should swapped in.

I have M474 Sport suspension with Bilsteins and correct springs on mine from factory, and on poor surface suburban roads they can give a sharp ride if the surface is broken, on stock 16" dish wheels at 40psi all round. On the open road at speed they are just magic. I replaced the fronts with new at 41k , refurbished the rears at 50k.
17" wheels wont help the ride, unless you are mostly on good roads.
What are you trying to achieve?

I run Bilstein gold body shocks on all four corners with stock springs with 18 inch rims on California roads on my 81.

The car is very comfortable and planted on the crappiest roads such as I5 and 101.

Before this I had worn out oil BOGE shocks untouched from the factory. The improvement was immense.

Thanks for the comments, I need to rethink about it because I am thinking to upgrade to 18 inch wheels too and the roads are quite broken up in where I live.

I like it more firm but don't want to be too harsh.

Cheers.

I daily my 928 in the worst roads Cali has to offer that includes 400 mile drives between San Francisco and top of LA county.

It isn't uncomfortable in the least if you get touring tires instead of all out high performance tires. As the touring tires will have softer sidewalls and make the ride a bit softer.

But even with extreme summer tires with stiff sidewalls like Toyo Proxies and Michellin Supersports the ride is still pretty comfy. It will only get harsh if you opt for way stiffer than stock springs.

I've had Bilsteins with stock springs for several years now and I think they're an excellent combination. Yes a little stiff in places but on good roads they are wonderful.

Personal preference but love the stock springs with Koni's on the medium setting.
