Default Incredibly BASIC question..... but just making sure??

Preparing to turn my engine over by hand to TDC.
I need to make sure I am oriented to the correct "clock-wise" turn.

As I stand in front of the engine bay and look at the front of the engine, this is the correct "clock-wise"?

In other words, "clock-wise" from the perspective of the driver's seat looking forward in not correct.

Don't kill me. Just making sure.

"There is no need to apologize for your ignorance... Unless you do nothing to correct it."

The only way you are going to learn some of this stuff is to ask.
And it's far, far better to ask this sort of stuff than to guess...

And be wrong.

Clockwise as viewed from the front of the car.

+1

It is confusing when most other directions (left / right etc..) are from the point of view from the drivers seat.

If you are trying to set TDC or some other cam position and you just miss it, don't back up....do another lap around.

Like Benjamin said...“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Making mistakes on these cars is expensive...best to eliminate as many possibilities for failure as possible.

given that most will turn the engine using the crank shaft bolt.... righty tighty makes sense the main reason for not going backwards is to avoid putting stress on the Bellville washers in the tensioner.

That's interesting, James and likely very true; but I have to wonder if they cannot take stress what are they doing in the tensioner. In other words, what other kind of stress might they be subject to that they are not already under.

Think windward vs leeward. On which side of the island would you rather be during a blow?

You can sometimes tell direction by timing marks.

Just remember to remove the wrench when you're done....

I once fired up my '82 with a socket and ratchet still on the crank bolt - screwed the bolt right out and took a few small chunks out of the fan but, luckily, no major damage.

Port = Left = Red. Starboard = Right = Green.

Easy to remember because Port, Left and Red have fewer letters than Starboard, Right and Green.

Would this still apply...if...I was standing on the bow facing the stern after the boat had capsized and was left-handed, but write right-hand, but was left eye dominant?

Just trying to clarify...lol
