From Gregs quote the pumps would then retail for $661.70 and $765.70 respectively.
How does a Porsche pump retail well North of $1000? +100% markup?

Im very confused.........given the same mark up for any parts reseller or dearlership is same (~+30%) and thats applied to all parts despite the manufacturer the Porsche pump would be not far apart from Laso?

No matter, I run the PK tensioner so can use the early pumps and if the Laso and Porsche pumps are priced not far apart I know my choice.

Beck-Arnley is a parts reboxer/relabeler. Parts quality varies from OK to way less than OK, solely based on how well a supplier is able to provide the lowest-cost pieces at the B-A 'spec'. There's a high likelihood that the B-A pieces are from a lowest-cost far-east manufacturer. Or you might find a great part.
My car has an early-cycle rebuilt pump from 928 International that's still going fine. It's a metal-impeller pump. I inspected it a year ago when the belt was replaced, and it looks and feels fine. The pump has/had about 35k miles on it, with religious coolant service in between, so no reason to change the pump. I know there are a few horror stories about impellers coming loose, grinding the block, etc,. So far so god on mine, so long as I don't accelerate I guess. I'm adding a new pump to the spares collection as part of my "put an IRA to work!" program. Projection is that the pump won't be installed during my stewardship period, but will be passed on to the next lucky sot along with the keys.
Rich Andrade shared a note on a great ride he had as a DE instructor in a recent Audi S8. There's an Audi dealer a long walk away from the new house, so easy to buy and have it serviced. S8 is like two S4s, right? Maybe they have a black one.

I called World Pac last week. An early Laso pump costs me $509. A brand new early water pump, from Porsche, costs me $589.
The great thing is that everyone gets to make their own choices. There is certainly nothing wrong with buying Porsche parts for my Porsche-- particularly if they are better or cheaper.

The really interesting thing about the price difference between the early and late pump, FROM PORSCHE, is that it would take literally minutes to modify an early pump to a late pump, on my mill.....
Of course, one would need to reuse one's original tensioner arm pivot pin, support, and hardware.
Maybe those pieces cost the extra $300?

Ed,
Thanks for chiming in and I realize I was referring to historical issues and not current issues. As I also said current customers which use your pump are very happy.
I know Hans has a design for a WP that covers most of my concerns with WP's currently. I would also like to buy one of your pumps without the "rubber clutch" as it is a proven product. Is this possible?
I am also going to work with Hans to see what can be done as well.

And most people buy Porsche parts from Porsche
In addition, & luckily for us all as 928 owners, wholesalers set up direct purchase agreements with the Porsche OEM supplier so we can get supply directly at a much better price. So you buy the same part as what would come in the Porsche box for significantly less.
The company (IIRC GPM) that makes the 928 WP's for Porsche is too small a manufacturer to dare to sell aftermarket unlike the larger companies such as Gates, Bosch and Zimmerman as an example.

Oh goodie, just opened a box of wine, have had my Xanax and a cigar in hand. This thread could be fun.
Kidding about the box of wine and Xanax, but it still should be fun.

GEBA has been in the water pump business a long time, unlike the junk "Hamburg- Technic" pumps from a few years ago. According to them, they have only made pumps for Porsche cars for about 3 years. I seems that it would be possible to research from the wholesalers how many GEBA pumps have been sold for other car makes and their failure rates.
IF there hasn't been an issue with impellers moving on the other applications, then the risk should be low (hopefully). LASO has apparently decided it really doesn't want the 928 market anymore from what it seems.
For those of us with stock tensioners, what other choice do we have? GEBA (new) , A rebuilt or Factory Porsche. It doesn't look like LASO can be counted on to continue production of the early pumps either as the castings are all the same and the difference is only the tensioner mounting pin & brace, so it really doesn't make sense for them to produce one and not both designs. Maybe they are just clearing out remaining stock of parts?
GEBA looks to be a serious company- when you click on this, give it time to load before starting or it's jerky

I'm not sure further discussion serves any purpose. I think everyone has made their point.

Geba Water Pumps
I hope Laso is still making pumps for our cars. There seems to be another name out there who makes the water pump for the 928, Geba. Who are they?
