Default Headlights not raising.

1985 928s

Headlights turn on, but I have to raise and lower them manually with the **** on the motor.

Took the motor apart and I am getting voltage to the limit prongs. Alternating when I switch the light switch from 0-2 so that tells me the switch is good and sending good signal.

I have pulled the comb. Headlight relay and cleaned it up inside and out. I've checked fuses they seem operational.

While motor was removed applying 12v to the case of the motor turned it on... Motor works.

Questions. How can I rule out relay needs replaced? Why does the lights work when lights are in down position? I broke the E-clips on the headlight raise/lower bar and I plan on drilling holes and using cotter keys, good idea? What could I jump/test to check that the relay is bad or good and if the limit switches work.

Thanks for all that help!

You could try cleaning the contact plate & contacts on the motor.

I experienced something similar to your problem and had two concurrent problems that confused matters somewhat. I had a problem with bad wiring to the motor and had to re-solder the main power connection but you do not seem to have that problem. Unfortunately It sounds to me as though you have a relay problem and that SOB is expensive to replace unfortunately.

Get an opinion from Alan before you start forking out your hard earned green stuff. Whether or not anyone can refurb this somewhat complex relay I do not know. when i had my problem I was in the fortunate position to have a spare one from my late [wrecked] S4- gone but still looking after me in many ways.

Thanks Fred! I did in fact clean up the contacts inside the motor while I was there.
