Mike made this suggestion before,
but it appears to have been glossed over.

when you drop the clutch it will come out as a complete unit ,
it consists of
2 clutch discs,
the intermediate plate,
the pressure plate,
the throwout bearing,
the release arm,
and the guide tube ,
and the stub shaft.

from your picture you have the the front disc and the I plate still connected to the engine.

I find it easier to remove the 4 bell housing bolts so they are all 2 turns in,
then remove the 2 trans mount to cross member bolts,
then the TT and trans will side back,
then this makes it easy to drop the clutch without having to drive the alignment pins out .

NOTE When driving the alignment pins into/ out of position,
the force is taken up by the thrust bearing,
so keep that in mind while your happily hammering away with the punch and BFH.

NOTE the early cars dont have these alignment pins

Thanks again. Sorry if I am a bit slow.

Does the starter ring gear need to come out with the clutch pack?

I have taken out the 6 bolts holding the pack to the starter ring gear and flywheel - and that is what the picture shows. Trying to get it all out. I know it looks like I am trying to get one disc out but that is because it is sliding on the shaft while I am wiggeling the whole thing to get it out.

the shaft should slide back just enough to clear its nose out of the pilot bearing in the crankshaft.

Work the assembly out of the flywheel lip. And out it should drop.

The starter ring is bolted to the intermediate plate, so yes.

And the clutch disk #1 in front of the intermediate plate.

Ahhhh, so I just need to yank the entire pack backwards, ring gear and all. No other bolts to come out other than the 6 PP 13mm bolts?

Yep.

And the two bolts on the guide tube (which you've done already).

Is this the original clutch pack and flywheel? Like Stan mentioned, if any of the original flywheel and clutch pieces were replaced with later (80-86) components, there may be three centering pins that align the intermediate plate to the flywheel, if they're there they will need to be tapped out or you won't be able to separate the IP from the flywheel, at least not without some pretty epic prying...

Here are the pieces. FW and Inter are pretty smooth but I will have them refurbed. Inner disc is 6,9 mm.

Again thanks, Chris

Nothing beats 1.5 hours of stroking and buffing the wheel with different types of emery cloth.

My forearm looks like Popeyes now

Buffed up...was very nice and plane to begin with as you can see.....50k mls car....

Probably going to use some help when it al goes together. All those balancing issues has got my head spinning. never had any problems on my prior 911 and 912s. But they only have half a clutch

Ordered new discs today...old were pretty ok 7.0 mm but what the hell.
