928s4 1989 should i buy 150k kms no history or 290k kms with service history?
Hi there.
im wanting to buy my second 928.
This time i am tossing up between two 1989 928s4's.
Both are advertised at a good price, look reasonably neat inside and out - and are around the same money - and both located in the same city as me.
One has 150k kms on it - owner has had it for the last 12 years. When i asked if it had a cam belt / water pump changed recently - the owner said - no, and took $5k AUD off the asking price.
The other, has 290k kms on it - sounds like it has a good (Porsche) service history, and the owner has recently done a lot of work on it:
cam belt
water pump
new suspension
torque tube and bell housing bearings
new tyres
new windscreen.
now - part of me says "go for the car with the lower kms" - the other part says "the other guy has a history, and just done a lot of the work".
i haven't seen either car yet... i thought i would get the forum's thoughts before going and looking.
my first 928 is a euro s '84 - that is in bits in my garage, waiting for me to have the time to start rebuilding it. it was my daily driver for a few years before i laid it up about 4 years ago - and i absolutely loved it.
should i worry about a car with almost 300k (with good service history?)
thanks in advance for your help
(i do realise i am being a bit pre-emptive before actually seeing the cars.. )

Almost a no-brainer for me....go for the low km's. That is a massive difference in km's. You can get the timing belt / water pump done yourself....of course others will disagree!
You be the judge on condition....you know what you are looking at.

I agree, normally I would say go with the car with better records, but 290k is a lot.

Given the history and status of your 1984 car, I think you want the car that is best sorted out, ready to drive. I also think "time in the hot sun" is at least as important as the odometer reading.

Take a look at each before discarding the high miles.
A well sorted high mileage example in good cosmetic condition will bring more satisfaction than a poor example with lower miles.

My general rule of thumb is, unless you know that the person doing the work did it right, be prepared to do it all over again.
That means, unless you know the service on the high mileage car was done by a competent person, you might as well go for the lower mileage car.
You will have to redo a lot of things either way.

at 175,000 miles lots of things are well beyond their design life...... and far closer to being used up !! Plus future resale values will always be impacted by the high miles....
