Default Belly Pan Ducts update

Ready for production.

All the tooling is complete. But understand that these ducts aren't cheap.

To make them requires a 4 stage stamping process out of a roll of 1008/1010 galvanized sheet metal, on 2 separate stamping lines. Then to final assembly welding and paint. Both ducts require a mounting tab to be welded into place also.

My first bid for the steel came in at a price where a set of ducts would cost $ 619.33, for the first 100 sets. After careful thought, I decided to contact some other suppliers.

My next supplier gave me a price based on weight, not linear feet. At the new price for the steel, a set would run $100.00 less for the first 100 sets. At 200 sets the price drops to $350.95 plus shipping. I have no idea what the USPS flat rate would be at this point. I think $350.95 is an affordable price for anyone that wants a set.

It'll take 12-16 weeks- ARO *DEPENDING ON QUANTY, for delivery. The first 10 days will be setting up both lines, and a test run. I've got $18,875.00 invested in fixtures and tooling, plus it'll take 6 employees to run the lines, make final assembly, and paint and package the ducts for mailing. I'm covering the cost of tooling and labor. The community has to cover the cost of the material.

At the end of the run all tooling and fixtures will be donated to the 928 Owners Club, so they could be used for another run in the future if needed.

This is an exact reproduction of the factory belly pan duct, made of steel. A set will last the lifetime of the car. BTW, it's my understanding that only the S4, and later 928's require the ducts.

Hopefully there will be a demand for 200 sets.

Joe Wow! - My first though is that this turned out expensive for the tooling... exactly replicating the originals is great and maybe everyone wants the exact stock look (not that you really ever see it), but ouch!

Kudos to you for doing it but that is a whole lot of money to sink into this project...

Joe,

Great job in doing this. INCREDIBLE expenditure on your part. Hope you can get the needed volume.

Best wishes,

Wow. Not as affordable we hoped, I think.

Nevertheless, I stand by my earlier "I'll take three sets."

Thanks Dave, you're a gentleman, and a man of your word.

Roger, said he can get a complete pan with the ducts for under 4 hundred. Had I known that I wouldn't have jumped in like a fool.

I'm not really out anything, I can write it off on a project here in Vegas. I'm gonna destroy the tooling and fixtures.

$350.00 bucks wouldn't cover the lunch tab for one of my clients. I had no idea it would bankrupt all the 928 S4 owners.

Now I know why these guys own the redheaded stepchild from Porsche; they can't afford a 911. Live and learn!!

Thanks for the support!!!

Joe,

I still stand by my set as well if this goes to production...hopefully at the lower price if you get enough sets spoken for. Thank you for taking this on, I hope everyone that said they wanted one steps up.

Cheers!
Carl

The ducts have not been available for years....not sure where Roger is getting them.

I would assume Roger's getting them with the plastic undertrays?

I do not recall the ducts ever being separately available?

Over the years I've ordered two new OE pans and they came with ducts.

The real question is what happens when Porsche AG runs out of its stock of plastic belly pans (with ducts?) At that point $300 for Mark's pan and $350 for ducts will probably look cheap.

Correct, the factory plastic under-tray comes with the ducts, I just discovered this myself.
I too always assumed the trays did not come with the ducts which is why they were so sought after.

However, a lot of people are opting for the metal under-tray sold by Mark Anderson, that unit does not come with any ducts, but has the openings in the bottom to attach them.

Big question: Are the factory under-tray's and ducts still in production and if yes for how long? If not, how long before the world supply is exhausted and we are back to square one?

The metal belly pan not only has the NACA air scoops, it also has the pre-drilled mounting holes for the vertical duct assemblies. In my case, I rescued ducts from a mangled plastic belly pan and then just pop-riveted to the new metal pan. Perfect alignment. Removal from old pan to mounting on new pan in less than 15 minutes. I would imagine the same mounting ease with Polecat's ducts.
