Default School me on sunroof less roof panels

Where are they? Are there any? Are people hoarding the them?

Are they still really low priced or has porsche caught on?

Trying to do some planning....

Mark lists new for $435,

Or I bet he's got a sunroofless roof clip around somewhere if you don't mind drilling welds. (?)

Current list price is $399 but I think they are out of them.
If they make more be prepared for $2399 or more.

Don't forget the elusive non-sunroof headliner. Roger was very kind to donate one for the cause. T

At this point, it's the only way I'm ever going to comfortably drive a 928. Let alone track one with a helmet.

For 400 I'd buy one.

BC,

Remove the sunroof panel and install smoked polycarbonate in its place for the headroom and better center of gravity/weight reduction.

In my thread 928 RS concept sketch toward the end of the thread,

a man did this and posted pics of it.

It looks very nice.

I know Mark got a parts car during Sharktoberfest without a sunroof. It may be the only choice now that Porsche has no stock.

I definitely enjoy not having one as I have seen the loss of headroom and it would make the car feel much smaller inside.

I have removed the sunroof on two of them. One was scrapped for other reasons, and the other one is here with me. I welded the skin of the actual sunroof back in and attempted to seal it. This did not work.

It's just too messy a way.

I have been tempted to do this mod. But have yet to find a good donor car.

For others thinking of doing the sunroof delete:

It's easy just to seal up the sunroof and doing it this way has the advantage of being less invasive and tricky for the novice.

The sunroof panel is very heavy. Don't use the old panel, use 20 gauge sheet. And remove all of the sunroof support architecture inside.

I used the sunroof panel as a template and added the little bit extra that the seal area makes up by using a fat sharpie and cutting the outside line.

The sunroof cars roof and sunroof panel have that extra bit of radius to them (at the seal area) so using the panel along with it being very heavy is not a good choice.

Get a bag of sand to work on with a rubber mallet and curve the traced
20 gauge panel.

Tack weld the new sheet panel you made slowly going around as not to heat up things to much in one location (pulls the metal) then remove all paint from entire roof and begin with filler.

Do as much of the bodywork as you feel comfortable with (to save $100 hour), then have a body shop finish it all up and spray it. Use quality filler not Bondo from Ace Hardware.

I use Evercoat rage /Gold for this.

The roof can be painted as you all probably know without getting into the rest of the car because of the car's design.

But for others reading this when you weld be sure you cover the windscreen with a canvas or the hot weld spatter will damage the glass.

If you are dedicated this sunroof delete process is not very hard.

Where there is the will...

BTW Tony wasn't JP always a sunroof delete 928?? And is the hood damaged? I can't figure that refection on the hood to be anything but a scratch..?

Note:

If you do the sunroof delete like i and others have closing up the existing hole,

there will be significant shinkage Jerry.

Give the body filler as much time as you can to really cure before paint.

Then do a guide coat to double check your work.

Then paint.

I learn lessons by doing. Doing right, doing wrong.

The windshield that I had just replaced did in fact get welding ***** in it. So that's something I won't forget.

The panel itself is not as heavy when you separate the two sheets. So that saved me the metal forming.

I did not weld all the way around.

I should try that after I get the sealant off that did not do well in the sun..
