Default Fuel Tank Question

Does anyone know if a fuel tank from a 1985 will fit in my 1979 928? If so, any weird connection problems? Thanks, Murf

I think they are all the same tank but some of the internals change like filters and the use of an internal pump.

They are all the same except for the early 78's with the stainless steel fuel cap and smaller screen at the bottom of the tank.

The internal pump screws into where the filter screen would go, with no dimensional difference to the tank.

78 has a strap to secure the filler 'snout'. 80-up has a screw mount at the top of the 'snout'. Not sure about 79.

^^^ There ya go... thanks for that.

So the biggest challenge will be securing the 'snout' and lining up the filler hole w/the opening in the body.

Securing the snout should not be a problem. The post-79 cars have a bracket in top of the snout that you just ignore. You can use the original strap. Mine was rusted so I made a new one out of SS. I can post a pic if desired

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. The 85 tank fell through, so this opens the window of opportunity for my search. A company called Oklahoma Foreign has a link to Car.parts.com that shows specific parts all over the country with prices, part grade, and location of part. There's three of them that have tanks for my 79. Yippee Ky-ya.

Correction it's Car-Part.com for parts all over the country specific to your year and model.

928 Intl ,I believe, still offers a 1 year warranty on their used parts. You will be able to get exactly what you need from them.

I just found one this morning, exactly matching my 79 out of Colorado. A place called Lon's. $200 + shipping. Great deal. Hopefully back on the road by Thursday.
