Noisy lifters
I changed the oil in my 82 after do the WP/TB change.
The previous oil was Royal Purple 20/50 and there was zero metal in the filter or on the pan magnet.
I refilled with Mobil 1 15/50 as it was on sale at Wally World and added a bottle of zinc additive.
The car had been sitting for about 3 weeks with no oil, so I'm sure the lifters had leaked out and I was greeted with fairly loud lifter noise coming from the drivers side.
Anyway, I haven't had a chance to drive the car to get the oil hot enough to pump up the lifters as I need to bleed the clutch, but should I add Swepco 502 before driving it around?
Is there any chance I could damage the engine by driving it with the lifter noise?
Oil pressure goes right up to 5 psi with any revving and sits at 3.5 at idle.
Can I buy 502 locally in Houston or is it an order only item? Is MMO just as good for noisy lifters?
Thanks!

Drive it now, worry about Swepco later.

It won't do any damage tot he lifters or cams. Just drive it a bit or let it idle and it should go away after 5-10 minutes.
I had this issue after letting my 928 sit for 2 weeks. It happens, just don't worry about it too much if you have the proper oil in it like you have.
BTW 5 psi sounds a bit low, do you mean 5 bar

Sorry, meant bar.
I'm an airplane guy and everything is in psi.
BTW, I got a NAPA filter and the damn thing seeped oil by the gasket.
NAPA got me a Mahle filter the same day at no cost, no leaks so far. Guess there was a flaw in the gasket face.
I never used a NAPA filter before, but I think I will stay away from them from now on.

I had the issue with my lifters being noisy on initial start and then even after warm when idling for several moments. Oil pressure was good. Engine had 165K on the odo. I am using Mobile 1 15/50 as well.
After adding the first bottle of Swebco 502 I have not had the issue again. I use it with each oil change.
Roger sells it. Only other place I found it locally was Austin VW. Their website lists retailers if I remember correctly.

I ordered a bottle from Roger this morning.
I finally bleed the clutch and drove it around to get the oil up to temperature. Of course, as soon as I put any load at all on the engine, the lifter noise cleared.
Adjusted the timing and idle, checked for leaks and turned her over to my 17 year old. He has another young girl to impress today.
Good thing this car has no backseat LOL....

That is a scary action.
There is no 17 yo that should be in a 928.
Sorry, I have seen too many performance cars around this suburb that have met an untimely end, including occupants.
No offense intended, but just my opinion.

The 82 has less HP than most cars in his high school parking lot.
He has friends with new Boss Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers that have near twice the power.
He is actually a very responsible driver and takes care of the car like a true Porsche owner.
But we were looking for a car that no one has, a little different than the herd. Hey, better than the motorcycle he really wanted.

You have just made my point. You left out the BMW's and Ferraris .They should not be driving them either. And I don't completely disagree with you esp. vs. motorcycle.
Hope he does well, still scary.

As long as HE hasn't heard of the reverse cowboy...
No Ferraris in the HS parking lot, but there are Bimmers, Benz and hugely jacked monster trucks.
There is some money in the neighborhood, but me thinks some parents go into hock so their snotty kids can have "better" cars than the other students.
My son has also done a ton of work on the car, so he has learned quite a bit in the process.

In my high school lot there were a ton of bimmers, 2 C4 vettes, some older mercedes (190e's and the like) and a ton of hondas and toyotas.
But there is a lot of money in the area so some students got their parents expensive hand me downs.
I no joke sold cookies so I could buy my 928 when I was 15. Glad to hear your son has an interest in the car unlike most people our age. They usually just want a cool looking fast car that their parents can pay for.

I'm lucky, my son graduated college two years ago and is still driving his 2000 six cylinder mustang. His biggest upgrade was a new paint job this year. I guess he didn't inherit my "need for speed".
