Let me introduce myself
Hey everyone!
I would like to say how excited I am to be part of this place. In the next few days I will be bringing home my first 928. Ever since test driving my first Shark shortly after getting out of the military in the mid nineties, I have had this need to be an owner rather than just a fan. Now with an open space in the garage, it's time. I have been wrenching on and restoring cars all my life and even spent a few years on the Chump Car circuit.
I will be rescuing an '84 a/t in Guards Red. This week I will be bringing it home to a nice heated shop to start it's new life. It is suffering from years of neglect and being left derelict in the harsh weather of the Colorado mountains. After digging it out of a snow drift, some fresh gas and a pair of jumper cables, I was able to get it started up and after about 30 seconds of sputtering, that smooth, throaty idle told me she was ready to go home.
I could go out and buy a newer 928 in great condition that was ready to polished with a T-shirt and ready to be driven and save myself some money, but for me it's more than that. Rescuing a car like this from someone that would just buy it, abuse it and part it out before scheduling a date with the crusher is much more meaningful, especially when someone at a stoplight gives you a thumbs up.
I will be posting pics shortly.

Well good for you! And welcome aboard! I like the 84 for a few reasons. some of the common issues don't affect that model, 16 valves less to mess with, a little easier to work on, in my opinion anyway, and if your lucky you can find one in red...oh wait...you did!

I'm in south Denver. I know the frustration of a car that fights you after being neglected for years. I am actually looking forward to finding out this one's personality.
BTW, I was stationed on Whidbey Island for years back in the 90s.

Thanks, I already feel right at home here. I'm getting a few pics edited now. We both know these threads are useless without pics.

The paint that I can see looks surprisingly good. I can't tell how bad the interior is up front, but I've seen a lot worse. You will undoubtedly be making the acquaintance of Mr. Robert Budd. He's the man for carpet and leather or vinyl upholstery, etc.

I am sorry to say it appears you have purchased a Chinese copy, they are popping up everywhere these days and only a well trained eye can spot the differences. I will gladly take it off your hands for $25.

It looks like most of the parts are there and the body is straight, terrific!
I am sure you know the dangers of rapid rewarming, thaw it out gently!

I am really starting to like this place, nothing like a smile on your face as you climb a giant mountain made of poo.

I'm going to have the heat off in the shop for the first day or so, just to let her acclimate. Most of the switches don't work at all, including the HVAC.
I was happy to see parts aren't that expensive and can be found pretty easily for a 30 year German car. All except for a new dash. It's always tough to decide what to do about a hammered dash.

Polargrade, as a relatively new Rennlister myself, welcome to this board. You will be most impressed, and of course benefit from, the extraordinary collective knowledge available from the members of this forum.

You weren't kidding about the snow drift!
Don't see that in Texas, good luck on the rehab.
Put Roger's and Mark number in your phone, I'm sure you will be calling them real soon.

I know who Rodger is now, going to track him down for sure. What's Mark's claim to fame around here?

928 International ....the main source for used parts for 928s has dismantled HUNDREDS of them. Mark Anderson knows more about 928s including racing them than you can imagine
