Hi Brian, As a newcomer to this site (and DIY mechanicals) reading through your intro has been an eye opener! I'm working on my engine mounts and oil pan gaskets now. It's good to see how much you've achieved in 'only' a year.

Decided to put the steering rack boot (PS) on the other day, but came to a standstill...when I noticed some movement in the inner tie-rod. It was tight when I replaced the outer tie-rod last winter, but it has gone bad.

So, it's either part out the car or put another $75.00 into her...

While waiting for the tie-rod I moved inside the car and removed the door panel. A couple repairs are necessary here. The windows have always went up herky-jerky since I bought it, and rattled when open half way, even though the PO had put new window motors in each door. The rear section of the door panel is slightly cracked, too. So, I'm going to repair this by making a backing-plate.

After removing the door panel I could see the problem with the window, easily. The PO (or his mechanic) had broke the little white guide wheel/bushing on the window regulator arm that rides in the window track. He probably unbolted the window regulator assembly from the door and twisted the mechanism around to get the motor out...without slipping the bushing out of the track first. Luckily, I have both window regulators out of my dismantled car and already have the drivers side installed and working much better than before. The passenger side works the same as the drivers side did, so it will be coming apart soon.

Brian.

If you are looking for the most financially sensible way to get to and from work buy a push bike. Cars, new, old, classic or vintage don't really make financial sense.

$75 is less than a tank of petrol (well here it is) - but your earlier '****s and giggles' list really shows how it all adds up. Happy new year to you and yours Brian (by that I think you know I mean your cars).

I'm not picking up any "particular tone"...and even if there is...we all have our days with these cars. Just the other day...if a person could still buy dynamite...mine would probably be in the stratosphere somewhere. But then...last night...everything went well with the door panal and window repair...so we are in love again...lol.

Default Pictures of window regulator exchange...

Door panel off, no hitches, came apart smoothly.

The bad...

The good...

Realized I had taken the passengers side door apart on the 78, but not the drivers and I'm working on the drivers at the moment...so out to the corn crib I went...and dug out the drivers door...which was the first thing stored there, behind the hood, hatch, fender, other disassembled door, both rear and front bumpers, push mower, snow blower, etc, etc.

Top regulator PS (78), bottom one DS (84).

78 donor door, still saving lives well after its death.

Default Okay, before I get "called out" on this...

Yes, I am a big fat lier...

My assistant or apprentice or grandson, whichever is preferred, actually took the door apart.

Monroe, getting the job done. Not bad...for a 7 year old.

Oh, and he's the one that organized the wrenches on the work bench, too.

Just want the topic to be factual...lol.

Brian & MainPorsche, let me assure you there has been no tone intended. Perhaps an excess of (misplaced?) Australian humour though. You both have been my biggest assistants in the garage over the last couple of weeks (followed by my 5 year old).

Please do have a good new year - to you and yours (family, friends and automobiles)...

Fortunately I've only ever encountered really helpful people who are looking out for each other.

Okay, while I was waiting for the tie-rod...my mind kept going back to my alternator repair. The PO, or his mechanic, had made a repair to the carrier bolt (long top bolt) and drilled and added a helicoil insert. Well, he drilled the hole way to deep and possibly used the wrong size drill...so when I added another helicoil insert and reassembled...it just didn't feel right while tightening the bolt. Just wasn't getting a good tight feel. So, after a couple nights of laying in bed...picturing the whole kit-and-caboodle coming apart while I'm hundreds of miles away home. I decided to redo the whole thing, by using a "timesert" type fastener.

Well, everything went much better and the proper tightness was reached to properly secure the alternator.

Tie-rod showed up and it was installed without much fanfare. Now the boot...that was a different story. That blankied-blank thing fought me the whole way. Granted, it being below freezing in the garage didn't help much. I'd warm the boot by the little propane heater, but by the time I got under the car and installing it...it would be stone cold again. Yes, there was really no rush to get it done and I could have easily waited until warmer weather...which is what a sane person would have done...but I get stubborn about this stuff and it was going together whether it liked it or not. Used many new swear words, and even invented a couple new ones, as it finally slipped over the outer portion of the rack.

Thought I was done with the mechanical end of things and would just be finishing up the door panels and window regulators...until I read the "how hot is your heat" topic...and remembered I wanted to change the thermostat and reseal the bridge housing. Looks like I'll be sneaking one more package of goodies by the Secretary of Interior...wish me luck.

All good, no worries on my end.

Default Summer...seems so far away.

We are having a bit of a warm up here...and this picture caught my eye while looking for something else.

Green grass...never thought I'd even consider leaving MI, born here, die here type of thing...but anymore...I'm thinking about getting the hell out of here.

Sorry, for the rant...it's just winter gets to a person sometimes.

You'd be welcome in Queensland any day (where it never gets cold)!
