It does have a replaceable bulb. Undo the spring clip to remove the bulb cover seal (the grey part) - the H4 bulb is underneath that.

As far as I am aware new H4s (and H5s) are readily available from Roger (ROG100) as well as other Porsche sources (and always have been...?)

Recent response was that new H4's are ~$350 & new H5's ~$428 (per lamp) - check for price updates - new H4s are a substantially better deal than new H5s - mostly because the H5s are rather rubbish in comparison.

So this was a good price on the Pelican listed NOS items.

Last night I was driving between LA and SF on Hwy 101 and there are areas that get really dark. I believe I recall I was exceeding the speed limit...how can this happen? My H5's just don't cut it.

The 55/100w bulbs are OK with stock wiring, but brighter with relays. Bigger than that and you definitely need relays.

Come on, you guys. Follow the rules: you may not buy or suggest buying things from Porsche for your Porsche. And dealerships are a no-no. Roger will get very angry and question your character...

H4s are the best! I use the 55/85 or 55/100 bulbs. Just make sure your wiring is in good shape.

In H5 lamps it is best not to use higher power bulbs - it may help you - but it creates unacceptable glare for everyone else - not a smart move. H5 optics are just not suited to more power since they have very poor focus & no sharply defined cut-off. For better lighting get H4 7" or 8" - these are much better anyway with stock bulbs - and can acceptably handle higher output bulbs too.

H4 were never "legal" in the US, correct? So when getting H4s for other parts of the world, don't you have to ensure that it's a part of that world where they drive on the same side of the road (assuming the car in question is in the US). I would expect putting LHD lights in a RHD car or vice versa would actually be worse for oncoming drivers, wouldn't it? I see H4 lights for sale now and then, and no one ever seems to state which they're for, which surprises me.

Yes of course you have to ensure they are the correct part number for LHD (can check this visually too), however the vast majority worldwide are LHD since there are rather few significant (WRT 928s) RHD countries. The biggest issue seems to be on cars imported from Japan where, although it is a RHD country, most imported cars are LHD equipped with RHD (ROW = H4) lights (odd?). These are desirable to import into Canada (and maybe? on to the USA) while a RHD car generally would not be... these used lights may also find their way onto the US market when swapped out.

In the USA nobody would be stocking new RHD H4s - there is no market, so you mainly need to be careful with used H4s & international sellers.

H4 lamps designed for the wrong side can never be adjusted to be acceptable - nobody should drive at night with them, the only option is to swap them for correct side versions.

The only reason H4's weren't legal at the time of sale were that the DOT lighting regulations were based on legacy lighting models & specifications that cannot really be justified on any technical grounds (then or now). The H4 ROW lamps are substantially better in every technical respect that matters - they are legal basically everywhere but the USA. When combined with 'well used' remote HL aiming (also not legal in the USA) they are quite ideal for their time. The USA DOT regulations required odd changes to vehicle lighting that was otherwise acceptable everywhere else in the world, and allow lighting choices that are specifically NOT acceptable in most of the rest of the world. Very few of these differences make much sense (a high center brake light may be the best example of one that actually does make sense).

I guess my eyes are getting old... I would definitely benefit from some H4's.
And it's an "eye opening" reminder every time I drive the newer cars in our household.

I've searched old posts, but a few remaining questions for clarification please:

1 - The left and right sides are the same, correct? (they both have the same optic wedge).
So I would simply need two of the P/N-928.631.101.03 to retrofit each of my S4's..?

2 - The Pelican post shows P/N-928.631.101.01. So that's just an earlier version/revision?

3 - I thought I had read there's something in the mounting that needs to be adapted (?).
Or do the necessary provisions perhaps come already included on the 928.631.101.03..?

4 - What about electrical? Are they plug and play? Or will I need to swap out the connectors?

5 - Has anyone tried or been successful adapting 7" H4's to an S4 or later model?
(I realize that type of heresy will be viewed as a backwards step in the overall appearance).
But the 7" version is abundantly available, MUCH cheaper, from good names like Bosch & Hella.
So just curious about that one...

1. L&R are the same part - currently: 928.631.101.03

2. 928.631.101.01 was superseded to 928.631.101.03 either is functionally equiv but 928.631.101.01 is perhaps more likely to be NOS (?).

3. The hinge hardware is included but not the mounting nuts/washers (easily sourced). Otherwise it is equivalent.

4 - You need new H4 connectors - easily sourced - use high quality ceramic ones.

5 - Yes several have installed 7" H4s into S4 cars - A cost effective and quite simple lighting upgrade. Whilst visually not as pleasing as 8" for most - it is functionally a significant step up at relatively low cost

So what exactly is involved in retrofitting a set of 7" H4's into an S4..?
The search did not turn up any posts that discussed the details of that.
Can someone please elaborate further, or steer me toward a procedure?
I'm still weighing the options, so just curious what's involved with that.
