I haven't done it so I don't really know. Obviously you need trim rings and I assume the mounting hardware is basically similar to the frames for the pre-S4 sealed beam units. Who can confirm?

To those with 7" H4s: If what you did was upgrade sealed beams to 7" H4s on a pre-S4: What was the mounting method for the H4 lenses? - since the yokes are basically the same on an S4 - this detail should answer it - any photos?

I think that the best answer would be to take advantage of Mark Anderson's half-price sale on some early light buckets, rings, etc...

I don't think that really answers the question Wally...
I totally agree with you about that suggestion as a good source.
But still not clear about exactly which parts would be needed...

Support your 928 suppliers and not Porsche dealers - Porsche dealers could not give a crap about 928 parts and the future supply. And that from someone who just enjoyed Mark's hospitality. And I am pretty sure Circle Porsche is not a sponsor of Rennlist either - double bad in my book!!!

928 International, 928 Specialists and 928 MS are there for the owners and CARE about the 928 as do myself and my company
Kevin I think you trying to twist my words - I certainly do not stop owners buying from Porsche dealers and I do understand that some so called dealers sell at lower prices than your 928 suppliers do.

I asked you to think about that when buying or promoting the sale of parts on Rennlist. The 928 suppliers all PAY to sponsor Rennlist - your Porsche dealer (Circle Porsche) does not. Support your 928 suppliers because if they are not around you would find out very quickly how bad dealing with a Porsche dealer really is. I certainly am not asking you to buy from 928sRus as you have already said you are boycotting my business but at least give your money to people who support the 928 - 928 International, 928 Specialists and 928 Motorsports. Yes you can save a couple of $ but is it really worth it in the long run.

OK, bumping this one back up again...

Has anyone ever installed 7" H4 headlights on an S4 or later 928..?
(i.e. - replaced their 8" DOT H5 headlights with some 7" H4 assemblies).

If so, what exactly was involved? That is what I'm trying to understand.

Thanks in advance for any experiences or guidance...

I have to ask why? H5 with a good bulb is as good as a 7" H4 - in all eventualities it is borderline if it is worth the effort.

The change is pretty easy and you need to add the ring. Also the H4 bulb connector to the harness - available at your local auto parts store - just take the bulb with you.

I think stock H5's are clearly worse than 7" H4s with standard bulbs. IMO you should not upgrade the bulbs in an H5 - it just leads to unacceptable flare for everyone else on the road - H5 optics do not create a cutoff nor are they particularly well focussed. In a 7" H4 you can also upgrade the bulbs for even more effective lighting because there is good focus and a sharp vertical cutoff that avoids major issues for others.

The trim ring Vs. all glass is the biggest downside here in the looks department.

Roger - you sell the 7" H4 lenses right? what is needed to mount these - just the buckets from the sealed beams & H4 connectors?

Just speaking from experience - I have 7" H4's on some of my early cars and compared to good 8" H4 they are pretty lackluster. My early 87 with 8" H5 with Silver Star Ultra bulbs is as good if not better. I will add that both are lackluster in the performance category.
However if price is the incentive then I can understand the change 8" H5 to 7" H4.

I was under the impression that any H4's (either 7" or 8") are an improvement over the H5's.

So I am simply exploring possible ways to get into H4's, with the 7" being more economical.

I own two S4's, so four assemblies would be needed.
The 7" H4's at ~$50 each is only $200, whereas the 8" H4's at ~$300 each is $1200.
And the first time a rock takes one of them out, I'd rather be replacing the cheaper 7".

The electrical connector is easy. I am completely familiar with that aspect.
The correct connectors are readily available, and they are easy to properly swap out.

So for the mounting, is it only the older trim ring that is required..?
If so, that's really straightforward. I could paint them body color to help with the aesthetics...

I also thought this until I actually made the change.
In reality - not so - marginal at best. However on a $ basis positive

OK. Thanks Roger.
So what was required to mount the 7" H4's in place of the 8" H5's?
Did you simply need to install a set of the older chrome trim rings..?
Or were there other additional mounting pieces or mods needed..?

Well, the 7" units will fall out of the 8" mounting points...

My suggestion was to call Mark or his minions and tell them that you want everything that you need to make the change. I think that would work well.

Someone had said earlier that most of the mounting yoke/cradle are the same...
(that might have been in one of the other posts I read during my search).

Well, I was hoping to understand what's involved before calling anyone for parts.
I'd rather not dump that task on someone else, if there's still more legwork involved.
I really expected that someone had already done this swap, and would know.
But I'm starting to wonder if it has ever been done before...
