Default Rear seat storage box

I think I read somewhere that early cars had a different part for 5-speed vs auto due to a wider transmission tunnel for the autos. Is that correct? I also think I remember reading that at some point, Porsche just used the wider tunnel and associated other bits for all cars. I don't remember that year though. The reason for the question: Would a rear storage box from a '78 5-speed fit a '86.5 5-speed?

I'm guessing it wouldn't fit right but if anyone can confirm...

Up until 83 they were different - auto v manual - according to PET.
84 onwards no difference.

Thanks Roger. So if I replace mine, I'll need the wider version.

My lid covering is pulling away, and it there doesn't seem to be enough material left to adequately glue it down. I don't see lids separately or even lid coverings, just the whole box, unlike the front one.

The lid can be taken apart and the leather can be replaced. The hard part is matching the material and color correctly. I had black leather, doing the same thing, which I replaced faux suede.

What color and material is yours? I have an undamaged one in fair to good condition in black vinyl from an '84 928s on a shelf. The '84 is being stripped and caged to go racing. Let me know if you'd like some pictures.

Mine is black vinyl as well. If you have the key, even better since I don't even have the key to mine. Pics would be great.

How do you get that lid off?

If I remember correctly, the upper lid is held in place at the base, 4 screws I think. You remove the rear glove compartment at that point. The cover can be removed by opening lid, removing the small Phillip head screws around the perimeter of the bottom of the lid. Don't forget to remove the lock. Then remove vinyl/leather and cut a new source of fabric using original as template.

I'll try that. I looked before but I didn't see anythingother than the hinge, which runs the length of the back of the lid where it connects to the storage box. So it seemed if I want to remove the lid, I'd have to remove that hinge.

On mine the hinge seemed to be attached in a way that doesn't facilitate easy removal; it looked like pressed-in pins at the hinge.

The screws that run around the outside are just trim to cover the edges of the vinyl -- this from my Leatherique page(no close-ups of the hinge, sorry):
